Re: Weather
Managed the first one with a 8 foot rebar and a 70 year old northern lass!
Know what you mean about the cable Ian watched as a tug tried to pull a dc8 out of the mud after it overshot the runway. Cable snapped and cut the top of a catering truck right off.

Very good advise ... I changed to winch rope many years ago. Just as strong, lighter, doesn’t rust or kink and if it should snap it just falls to the floor rather than having the potential to cut you in half.

Re: Weather
Safety tips I was given when pulling. The basic one was don't pull more than 80% of the cable rating but the instructor admitted that on a flat pull it would be difficult to evaluate the load especially from mud.
Nothing and nobody within the arc of the length of cable. Protect the operator.
A heavy tyre with a strop loop and the cable passed through the loop. If a long pull then more than one.
Heavy Blankets or coats hung over the cable at intervals of its length.

Re: Weather
Had a really bright clear day today.
Checked the inverter power output at midday, just above 1KW. In the summer at midday it does 3.7KW.
My roof is at 33 degrees and so in the summer the sun is within a degree of perpendicular to the panels. Today the peak elevation was only 18 degrees above the horizon.

Re: Weather
Another benefit of rope .... should it snap you can splice it back together, with steel your left with what remains on the drum.

Re: Weather
Morning all!
Overcast in West Cornwall today, all very quiet on the weather front, very little wind and no immediate sign of rain, a bit of a nothing day really but at least it is very mild still. Had the first birds investigating the new nest boxes yesterday which is encouraging and woody is hammering away!
Drive to Falmouth today (osteopath visit) so be good to get out again.
Have a great day

If you can hear woodys,! Hog, maybe armour up the entrance holes in your new boxes, I.e with a tin can flattened out and small hole in it to protect the front of the bird box, Woodys are known to enlarge the entrance hole and kill the smaller birds. ( of course you already know that. )groundhog wrote:Morning all!

Quite right of course, just out the door and down came the Cornish rain, similar in consistency to the sun just makes you much wetter.

No, I didn't know that about woodpeckers so will take the precaution. It turned in to a wet and miserable day in the end, never mind tomorrow can only be worse!!

Re: Weather
RAF St Mawgan under the guise of Newquay Airport is going to be busy this year.
G7 meet is down the road near St Ives in June so they are expecting Air Force One and transport for The Beast and the rest of Biden's Motorcade. That and some of the other leaders turning up its going to be swarming with plane spotters.
Then it's also the UK home for Virgin Orbit (not that its been used for it yet). Moves afoot to try and get Cosmic Girl (ex Virgin 747) which is the launch platform over to show off in front of the G7. They had their 1st successful launch a few days ago.
My son works there and they have a project to reinstate some of the taxiways to full width ready for the big stuff. He's hoping they will finally get the radar upgrade being promised for the last 3 years.

Re: Weather
Those few days will be manic down here, RNAS Culdrose is far more secure than NQY so I expect to see a lot of helicopter traffic with AF1 tucked up in a secure military base somewhere. NQY will for sure be a very busy airport let's hope the weather...

Re: Weather
The trouble is AF1 needs a big runway so the options are limited, because of its history NQY is longer than most regionals. I suspect that was part of the planning requirements for the G7. They have had so much trouble with demonstrations at Capital locations, not so many roads to monitor down to Kernow
The trouble is it is glorious down there in good weather but....

Still very mild 10 degrees but the wind is getting up now a SW 5-6 gusting 7 at times. Sky completely overcast but at least it is not raining..... yet
Catching up on the outside jobs well so might have a peak at the strange happenings on the van with the Trauma heating. Works perfectly but red light flashes on gas showing low 12v... but it isn't?? I have some sheet aluminium to make those surrounds for the bird boxes so that is also in the list for today!

Always been wary of stating the obvious, but what is obvious to you may be a complete mystery to others, so, having affixed hard hat and chin strap, ........You need a hole in the ally for the wee birdies to get in!!!!!groundhog wrote:Still very mild 10 degrees but the wind is getting up now a SW 5-6 gusting 7 at times. I knew I had wasted my money buying all those little padlocks and keys, thought they would feel more secure that way.

In our garden the birds would have notified the resident squirrel, who would have come along with the screwdriver he pinched last year, and unscrewed the aluminium door.

Re: Weather
Dry and cool here, lots of wee birds and several blackbirds who are spending more time chasing each other than feeding. I got sent out to clean the shade of our backdoor light which had some accumulated detritus in it. Classic outcome, screw holding the glass shade was rusted so the 5 minute job took a couple of hours with tool bags, boxes of fixings and cordless drill coming out.

Wind has dropped a lot after a windy night, overcast and damp but yet again really mild. A day for indoors jobs I think!
