Re: gearbox problems
My original welded repair in 2014 was on 2nd and 3rd.
However Maurice told me the on strip down this time there was all sorts of other gunge in there too. It took him a couple of hours to clean it all up before trying get parts for a rebuild.
As the search became fruitless for 2nd and 3rd synchro he found quite by chance the new 'old stock' box

But which bits were welded together Terry? I know how a synchro works [or I think I do] but don't understand what was welded or why?

Re: gearbox problems
Hi Frank
Because my garage arranged the repair through a 3rd party I can't remember how detailed their invoice was to my garage.
I'm not at home at present so away from my service history folder.
I'm back there tomorrow as I've got to take the Harmony back to garage for some tidying up after a sill repair last week. I'll see if they've got some of the original paperwork from the 3rd party engineering company.

Re: gearbox problems
I can sympathise with you having been in the same situation many years ago . I stripped my Ford 3 litre gearbox and found it needed 1st 2 nd gear synchro hub and second gear. Parts at the time were over £300 with me fitting them. At the time recon boxes were arout £140
I went to a well known gearbox reconditioner in Glasgow, and on entering their premises found them to be absolutely filthy , benches covered in grit and dirt which was being deposited inside their rebuilds. Also boxes were being rebuilt from piles of donor scrap parts and were destined to be noisy as parts with different wear patterns were thrown together.
I made excuses and left , the owner was very upset and followed me outside to my car spoiling for an arguement. A passing off duty policeman intervened and gave him his marching orders and then hinted if I wanted to 'take him on ' he would get a few mates to help as they had all been done by the shoddy work that they produced!! Apparently they were well known to the boys in blue for being cowboys and they were looking for payback!
A lucky escape for me but poorly executed rebuilds are rarely any good and end up either noisy or fail within a few thousand miles, ' just ' out of warranty. If this particular box is now so rare is there any way that a converter plate could be made up to use another box mated to this engine? Frank seems to be very knowledgeable with this van....Problem is I suppose all the builders vans fitted with this box have all been dead and buried for years now leaving a few lightly used ageing campervans needing parts..

I would have thought that welded repairs to gearbox parts would require a full heat treatment process afterwards.
I spent many years observing at DB Tractors, BL, and the like during my years as an induction heating engineer and much of it was heat treatment of vehicle parts like this.

We had only had the van a year and luckily the RAC warranty covered it as Peugeot didnt want to know.
It still bothers me that the gearbox isnt expected to last. We had a Ford Transit Duetto before and it still had the original 20 year oĺd gearbox in it when we traded her in.
Where did you get yours fixed?

Re: gearbox problems
you're ahead of me - I don't really even understand what a synchro is! And tbh I don't really care - brain too full with other stuff. I just want to be able to trust a garage to practice some honour in their work, to the same degree as I do in mine.boxerman wrote:But which bits were welded together Terry? Re: gearbox problems
In the end I took it to Geartech nr Worcester.
You wont like hearing this but I was advised to stay away from GRG by a mechanic friend he had had bad experiences with them and recommended Geartech. Geartech handed the RAC warranty claim for us and the RAC seemed to respect their opinion etc.
Only time will tell if we did the right thing.

Re: gearbox problems
Speak to Maurice at MW Autos in Wisbech to see if he will take on the job.
He will let you have a courtesy car and you can pitch up at Ferry Meadows CMC Sit overnight going and coming back.
I live near Southampton and it worked for me.
My new gearbox and clutch cost £2200 but my goodness what a joy to drive !

That's where we differ - I want to know how things work and how to repair them without being dependent on others, of it that is not possible, to understand what work needs to be done and why.

Re: gearbox problems
With your vin number I can acces your factory build notes and an exploded diagram of your gearbox.
Pm me if you would like me explore that option.
