Replacing Hankook XV27 MF105AHr Battery
I'm looking to do more off grid next year and need to replace my original U/S battery.
Alpha Batteries technical have recommended the following battery to be compatible with Autosleeper installed Sargent charger etc.
12V 110AH EXPEDITION GEL LEAD CARBON ULTRA DEEP CYCLE BATTERY (EXP12-110C) at £189.99
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
My favoured local battery supplier who I have used for many years is recommending a Numax 120AHr battery
I think it is this one
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
I welcome comments from anyone who has purchased this battery or opinions on an alternative to look at
Thanks

Re: Replacing Hankook XV27 MF105AHr Battery
I can’t comment on the batteries but don’t forget to check the battery size and orientation of the terminals are compatible with the existing.
In my Symbol I was able to go for a larger battery but the terminal orientation limited my choice without having to rework the wiring.

If your battery is under drivers seat you are limited by size, bigger amps means bigger physical size. I got like for like from Tayna , Platinum LB6110L 100amp. My old battery was at least 5 Yr old (on van when I bought so don't know actual age ) and with my 80w solar I have no problem being off grid for a week or more during spring and summer.

Re: Replacing Hankook XV27 MF105AHr Battery
Thanks for the advice Paul and Dave
The battery is under the bed in the Symbol in a large battery box.
I'm pretty sure the batteries I've looked at so far are physically compatible.
However, I am capable of modifying the wiring if necessary.

So what battery did you go for Dave? Was your original battery U/S?Dbvwt wrote:I can’t comment on the batteries but don’t forget to check the battery size and orientation of the terminals are compatible with the existing.

Yes Baggie, my leisure battery failed after 3 years, a fault of sitting in the showroom before I bought the van I suspect.
I went for this one, primarily as the terminals were the same. It’s nothing special but after a year I’ve no complaints. It does sit high in the battery box but as you know we have plenty of space under the bed.

I also think my battery was neglected by the dealer before I bought the van too. Looks a sensible choice but I was under the impression 120AHr was max for the Sargent chargers etc.?Dbvwt wrote:Yes Baggie, my leisure battery failed after 3 years, a fault of sitting in the showroom before I bought the van I suspect.

Re: Replacing Hankook XV27 MF105AHr Battery
If you look at the battery specs it doesn’t look much different to the same 120ah version!
I may be wrong but I think the EC480 CP had a 130ah setting, either way I’ve not experienced any issues.

Don't see why capacity would bother a charger, for a given charge rate, say5A, it'd just take longer?

I have 2 of the Advanced XD27 Dual Purpose Leisure Battery - 105AH fitted , these are The same as the Hankook batteries connected to 250w solar , these have been excellent batteries and cheaper than hankook
Bought them from Advanced battery supplies, I also got a 10% discount for been ex armed forces

Re: Replacing Hankook XV27 MF105AHr Battery
When looking to replace leisure battery I think a very important factor to consider is the ability of your as fitted charger. If it is not suited to a potentially superior battery then there will be no gain and maybe a loss if it is unable to charge correctly.
I am considering the same situation, replacement for my Hankook, which is SLA. My as fitted charger (PX300) is only configured for charging LA/SLA so adding a different type ie agm will result in incorrect chargeing and very likely not a gain in battery performance.

Re: Replacing Hankook XV27 MF105AHr Battery
Thank you all for your comments. I am still pondering.
Before purchase I will check my charger (as above) is suitable and how to set it up.
Freelander your choice of two Advanced XD27 batteries looks good to me.
It's made me think I should copy your set up.
With help from my electronics engineer mate the cabling and terminations will not be a problem. I know about cross connecting.
Did you add a second battery box or have you got a box that takes both batteries?

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]With a solar system that works and not just for sales person talks
I can run my inverter to power 240 volt items and will recharge the 2 batteries back to full charge
The Sargent control is set as to the 2 battery amps if I should use it to charge from the mains

What size inverter have you got and how is it connected to the 240v supply please

Re: Replacing Hankook XV27 MF105AHr Battery
Was about to ask Glyne the same question.
I think an inverter might be next.
Maybe a 30amp B2B might be better investment because of limited room for extra solar panels and the UK climate.

You have to press the up and down buttons on the control unit and this lets you go to the settings .when you fit new batteries you set this as to the amps and gives the correct % as to the power in the battery.all the controls will only work correctly if set correctly

I get some strange looks when seen using the microwave even my kettle parked at the sea frontFreelanderUK wrote:Thanks Glyne, that’s given me something to think about, are you able to do a quick blast on the microwave, I will have 400w of solar and 210ah of battery powerglyne lock wrote:[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]I get my power from 2x80w solar panels but fit a 3rd panel in the winter and the inverter is plugged into the 240volt feed coming into the camper so will power any of the 240 mains items
If you fit an inverter like I have it will power all the items I require but you need the battery amps to run it
Also a good solar system if not will end up putting to much load on the alternator to keep batteries charged and burn moor fuel as to the alternator always under heavy charge load
Hope that helps Chris

@gylne lock do you also have a B to B charger and how is the on board charger turned of so that the inverter is not using power to try and charge them, do you just run the cable out the back doors to the electric socket , cheers
