Reversing Camera - Wiring?
The reversing camera on our Symbol failed suddenly, blue screen with "NO SIGNAL".
There are many posts here about similar failures, often because the camera has failed.
I wanted to investigate a bit before buying another camera, and it seems like our wiring might be different to some other vans.
At the back, the single multicore cable from the camera disapears forward, at a high level but not in the roof.
At the front, the single cable from the display goes into the headlining and then down towards the steering wheel.
Can anyone help with more detail on what route the cables take, and where the "control box" is. It may be just a junction box, I am calling it a control box because just after delivery our camera stopped and the dealer said they fixed it by replacing the "control box." I guess there must be something that connects up to a reverse gear feed, and 12V power; not sure if it really does any control...
BTW, the display unit seems to be working, it powers up when reverse is selected and responds correctly to the remote control.
Thanks.

Re: Reversing Camera - Wiring?
If you have a Veba display (it looks like a rear view mirror) then I don't think there's a control box. The display unit connects to the camera, 12V supply and reversing input, often with a plug and socket under the wheelarch edge trim on the driver's side. Definitely worth checking if that's connected properly. The other connector I'm aware of is behind the high level brake light. Remove the light unit and you'll find a void in the roof structure.
Other than checking connectors and doing basic continuity checks there's little else you can do. Tracing the wiring isn't that feasible and in any case it's rare to find a problem with cabling given its inert nature. A cable failure is invariably due to an external factor, such as drilling a hole through it by mistake.
If your camera is the original then it's most likely reached the end of its life. You'll find posts by me and others who've replaced failed cameras of a similar age to yours.

I meant to add that the Veba display can take two camera inputs, selected using the remote. Check the remote to see whether the input has inadvertently been switched to the other input.

That's a good tip for anyone reading this in the future - yes I did do this.Kemerton-bath wrote:I meant to add that the Veba display can take two camera inputs, selected using the remote. Check the remote to see whether the input has inadvertently been switched to the other input.

Re: Reversing Camera - Wiring?
Yes - I have a Veba display. It may well be that the camera has failed - but it stopped so instantly, I thougt I should try and check for power, a blown fuse or a disconnection. Just one minute to the next, in fine weather and not working on the van etc. I checked the display to cable connection in the head lining, and the camera to cable connection behind the high level brake light, all OK. I'll try and find the power connections near the wheel arch.Kemerton-bath wrote:If you have a Veba display (it looks like a rear view mirror) then I don't think there's a control box. From all the posts... I am guessing that I am heading for a new camnera...

Re: Reversing Camera - Wiring?
For anyone reading this in the future: on our vehicle there is a box located just above the fusebox by the steering wheel. It can be accessed simply by taking off the fusebox cover, and some plastic trim around it. It is black and has connections for two video inputs (one used) and the display, plus power and reverse feed. There is a voltage regulator inside the box - it is about the size of a large matchbox.
After fiddling around with these connections, and the connection at the back behind the 3rd brake light, our system started working again.
So that's a bit worrrying - but at least it is working as it does not look easy to change the camera!
