Roof Thickness Empty Roof Thickness

Post by Johntodd Sun Aug 30, 2020 3:48 pm

We own a Warwick Duo and due to it being ripped off in the wind last week it needs to be replaced. There are two options depending on “roof thickness”. I have no idea how thick the roof is, any advice would be appreciated.

I suspect a typo here, unless, of course, your roof really was ripped off!
Seriously though it's steel, ribbed for extra strength, and will be circa 1mm thick, poss slightly less.
If you're meaning a solar panel was ripped off, my current (2013) Warwick Duo solar panel is glued on with fairly large area corner brackets and sikaflex adhesive, done by the dealer when I bought it.

Also, although very windy here last week, 55mph gusts, it sees a lot stronger and sustained winds than that at 70mph on the motorway, possibly into wind as well as!

If you want more or different options PM me.

I guess you're referring to a roof light, in which case the thickness is measured between the exterior flange of the roof light and the headlining inside the van.  Roof lights comprise the exterior cover (a dome) and the frame that fits inside the van and which contains the blind and insect screen.  Roof-light manufacturers usually specify a maximum roof thickness, which equates to the max vertical distance allowable between the outside and inside assemblies of the light.  Depending on the design of the roof light, it may be necessary to purchase a fitting kit that includes a spacer to fill the vertical thickness.

The exterior flange of the roof light sits on a base-plate that provides an interface between the corrugated steel roof of the van and the base of the roof light.  If you stand in the van, underneath the open vent you should be able to measure the distance between the top of that base-plate and the headlining.  You may need to remove the interior part of the roof light in order to establish this measurement.  I have today replaced one of my roof lights (not due to wind damage) and the roof thickness on my van is 65mm.  Being a similar van to mine in terms of roof construction, yours should be similar.

Thank you very much for the detailed responses, sorry about the typing error, yes the roof vent blew off, we had left it open on the minimum slot, silly me.

Hi, if it's a Remis skylight like those fitted to the warwick etc. then sharply pull down the interior underside plastic trim which includes the blind etc. it is fixed in position with six rubber ball and socket fixings, once you get one edge free you can see how it's held up.
You can then see the roof lining thickness, insulation, and vent too roof clamps and surround. You might also see the window fixing arrangements.
What is your intension? a quick fix , as you are away, or replace the tilting skylight ?
hope this might help

Thank you. We carried out a temporary repair while away and we now need to replace the whole unit.
