Minimum brake disc thickness
Does anyone know the minimum thickness for the front discs on a 2012 Boxer?
- or has anyone found a website that lists this specification?
After a long search I've found plenty of references to the importance of replacing disks when they get to the minimum, but no-one seems to say what it is!
Thanks in advance...

Check this website, measurements given for solid or vented discs...

Having just replaced our front disks, I was surprised how many different thicknesses are available to buy and how badly corroded the rear face of the discs were, when I removed them.

That's not exactly our van but I quickly found the right one. There is a choice of sizes but only one is the same size as currently on our vehicle: I have read comments about increasing the rotor size for improved braking but I think I'll stick with the original size.
Vented Diameter: 280.0 Thickness: 24.0 Minimum Thickness: 21.9
...which makes our old discs just under the minimum so we'll change those at the same time as the pads.

Re: Minimum brake disc thickness
I wouldn't bother about minimum thickness, just replace them if in doubt. Around £80 for a pair of vented discs and pads.
I've not had to replace pads often, but when I do I also fit new discs.

Fair comment, but "if in doubt" needs a bit of expertise I think. Our disks look ok, no cracking or discolouration, and no scoring. So I wouldn't necessarily feel they had to be replaced - until I measured the thickness. No doubt now!bikeralw wrote:I wouldn't bother about minimum thickness, just replace them if in doubt. This is the first set of new pads, I haven't found discs worn below spec by a single set of pads before - must have been hard wearing pads.

Re: Minimum brake disc thickness
It is my understanding that brake pads are now more eco friendly (no asbestos or similar?) and are harder, thus wear the discs more. I have always been reluctant to change discs even if scored (in the belief that the pads will bed to the discs) but I am not so sure anymore. Certainly if heavily corroded they will need replacing because pitting will reduce contact area and accelerate pad wear. At £80 a pair that also seems quite cheap!
