roof bed
I all, am currently a VW T2 owner , have been since 1986 but am now looking to enjoy something more comfortable . Presently thinking of looking at a 2 berth Trooper but before I travel, I'm wondering if it's possible to install a roof bed. Is there room up there ? Has anybody else done this ?
Regards,
mike.

Re: roof bed
One thing you need to be aware of (if you're not already) is that Troopers were not all fitted with the same type of roof.
Most are fitted with the distinctive solid-sided roof, and A-S did fit upper hammock-style bunks in that type of roof - though I have never seen one fitted in a Trooper.
The more recent Troopers are fitted with a Reimo-style roof, and I believe that these can be fitted with a roof bed panel - but I don't know what was standard and what was optional as supplied from A-S. I have looked at a couple with that type of roof recently, and neither had a roof bed panel.
It can be more complicated though, as the solid-sided roof sometimes got replaced - so you may find an older van or two with a different style of roof. I've come across several of these recently.

Re: roof bed
Thanks for the reply, the model I was thinking about is on a 56 plate and is a couple hundred miles away . Judging by photos I've seen ,the roof is certainly high and long enough . Thanks once again.

Re: roof bed
I'm not sure if that would have the solid-sided roof or not - I think they were both produced in parallel for a while, with the other one being called a "Trooper Low-Line" or similar name.
The bunk arrangement in the solid-sided roof was "interesting" to use (because it was essentially a hammock) but not uncomfortable for smaller people. I doubt that you would be able to get the parts from A-S to retro-fit one though - I don't think they were ever a very popular option, so it's unlikely that they will have stocked those parts for many years now.
Edit: Actually, having looked at some photos of the inside of a recent Trooper, I don't think the "hammock" style bed is possible because they leave in a portion of the T5's roof at the rear. It does look as though there is a step in the roof edge where a panel ~could~ be fitted, though...

Re: roof bed
...my '07 Trooper has the solid - side roof, and the previous (only) owner had the optional roof bed supplied with it, three upholstered "boards" that fit across the perimeter of the van; the front one has a net across (not for tennis), and there is also a heavy ladder that clips to the side for access.
All taken out by me, just a two berth is fine.
I really can't see much point in it, for anyone needing a four berth would be much better off with a AS Trident, designed specifically to accommodate four people, with far more headroom in the top bed.

Re: roof bed
I had that type of van and there was a double bed in the roof but it was tight up there and more suitable for children. We changed it and now have ab A.S Clubman GL vw and the reason we changed was to get a bit more comfort.
