Re: Weather
Our Redwings and Fieldfares must have headed your way as there's no sign of them here, lots of Blackies, some continental ones with darker beaks.Liam wrote:Lovely dry bright start to the morning down here in the west - it seems to have been wet for weeks now.
The Red Wings have finally arrived and are feasting on the abundant Holly berries that we have this year. Very few Blackbirds have returned so far this year, which is unusual, but a Thrush has already started singing, albeit brief, in the distant fields.
The sort of things that lift the spirits in this period of gloom.

Funnily enough, the Fieldfares only lasted a couple of days here then moved on. It seems there is so much food about, they are spoiled for choice. I thought that all blackies had dark beaks for the first year then it turns yellow?

Re: Weather
Damp, cooler morning starlite sky, correct Tony, however our Filey bird group have reported an influx of migrant Blackbirds coming in over the sea from the east.
These have a slightly longer wing and don't retain the yellow eye ring like ours .
We have a couple of young male Blackies here with dull Matt black beaks, my beak was blue with the cold yesterday.

The rain arrived as predicted at 11am and hasn't stopped since, it's also perishing. Just as well, we had parcels getting delivered so yesterdays exercise was walking from the kitchen to the front door and back Couple of dry days on the horizon but getting colder again.

Re: Weather
Bright, dry and mild down here for the moment, wet promised to arrive after dark followed by some colder weather tomorrow. We have had a bit of a break from leaf sweeping (mainly Copper Beech) for the last week or so but I notice that the Oak tree is now just starting to shed its leaves - better get the rakes and blower out again!
Really interesting info on the Blackies - thanks for that Boaby.

Cool damp morning, not a lot of wind, brief light showers earlier,

Re: Weather
Dry and cool here with patches of frost. Lots of berries here too but no birds eating them We do a bit of walking when we're away with the van and we have never seen a year with more acorns and horse chestnuts on the ground. Hedge rows were stuffed with ripening brambles, berries and big, fat rose hips. Good year for the wildlife in the countryside.

Damp and still a mild 11C here this morning.
Does this abundance of berries mean we are in for a very hard Winter?

Minds me Tony, several years back we were down in Notts for a van habitation check etc and we had stopped overnight near Marquis, the Aqua park was vast , anyway ,was walking Maisie at the time and came across a massive conker tree ,I immediately went into schoolboy mode and filled my pockets with massive conkersAskit wrote:Dry and cool here with patches of frost. Heavy overnight frost, now thick fog with the tempreture very slowly climbing at just over 1C and the sun is nowhere to be seen yet!

Re: Weather
Cold and damp but the sun is almost clearing the horizon so it will heat up a bit. Still no birds apart from the mysterious ones eating the nuts when nobody's looking

Re: Weather
Frosty, but much brighter start today, less fog (forecast had us down for a yellow fog warning!) and it looks like the sun is about to burn through it. Still no mass invasion of birds eating the berries but we have had a flock of Blue and Long Tail * Inappropriate Word * fluttering around the hedges.
