Side panels - Peugeot 1998 Symphony Empty Side panels - Peugeot 1998 Symphony

On the black 'plastic' side panels on my Symphony I have what appears to be grey mastic oozing out from behind the side panels, running down the side of the van and I end up gently scraping it off.  This happens when the weather is hot.  Anyone have any idea how I can stop this and what the purpose of this 'mastic is?
In regard to the panels themselves can anyone recommend something that I can use to bring back the black colour and also use in rejuvenating the black on the bumper?

For the colour I used Autoglyn Bumper care. As for the mastic, I had similar but ignored it.
