What a difference a day makes. On Monday the van went through its MoT Test with flying colours. No problems and no advisories.
Earlier today I thought I would run the heater (gas only) just to warm the space up a bit. When pushing the button on the P4 controller, instead of getting a click followed by a nice green light followed by the normal ignition sequence I was treated to a click, NO green light, a sound of the fan starting up for a few seconds then  everything going quiet. The propane bottle is almost new, there are plenty of volts in the battery (I was on mains hookup at the time and I lit the hob just to confirm plenty of gas.
Any advice very welcome but firstly, where is the heater itself located?  Is it the  heater that sticks out the side of the van or is it another one cunningly hidden.
I enquired of a Poole motorvan repair garage who informed me that as Carver no longer exist and the Carver P4 is  quite old they did not want to get involved. As a fairly non mechanical person I feel slightly helpless.

Thanks for reading this.   Mick.     confused3

Just had a thought. Do these heaters have some sort of spark ignition because I  cannot hear any clicking noise as it tries to ignite. If there was such a system it would lead me to think that either the igniter or the wiring had a problem.

There is fact sheet in that section (it is shown as Carver C4 by mistake) if you haven't got the instruction book. It is located under the long bench just in front of the oven. There is an access hatch in the bed board under the bench cushion. you need a slim blade such as a knife to prise it out.

Thanks Paul for the info. I do have a copy of the instruction book for the heater. I read it quite carefully and regret I am little if any wiser. I have a hope, perhaps forlorn that the fault might be a simple one like s fuse blown or a wire come loose. It looks like I am going to have to entrust the problem to the experts. The question then is who would be best to go to. Any thoughts on competent  firms in Dorset or adjacent counties would be welcome.

Good Morning All      hugegrins

Once again thank you for your suggestions and observations.
I had resigned myself to sending the heater back to a company 'up north' who specialise in overhauling the Carver P4.  First job was to find the offending item so using information received from the forum I found the access hatch under the long bed mattress. Once opened I could see the heater bolted to the floor. Also visible  were several wires, one of which plugged in to one end of the heater box. Catching hold of it more in hope than expectation I pushed it in. Could not feel any definite movement although it seemed to be quite a loose fit.
Reached up and pushed the button on the P4 control panel......the fire lit immediately.
My joy knew no bounds. Without doubt at least a couple of hundred pounds saved plus several large doses of hassle.
Very many thanks to those who helped guide me in the right direction.
