Hello all,  We are new to this van which doesn't have a handbook so we are having to try everything out.  We can get hotwater via mains electricity but not with gas or leisure battery.  I have turned the gas cylinder on, the gas tap under the sink, the 12 volt switch is on and the pump is on.  Am I missing something?  Wendy

Hi, Wendy

I don't know of any 'van that uses 12V to heat the water as it would flatten the battery very quickly.  So most are either 240V from hookup and gas

Many 'vans have an external flue cover to protect the water heater flue whilst driving.  There is usually a safety interlock which will prevent the heater from operating on gas if the cover is in place.  On our Pollensa, the flue outlet is on the driver's side of the van. The cover is push-on but sometimes needs some help with a small penknife or similar to free the top clip.

There is a picture of the flue cover here:

The following page has a (small) picture of the flue with the cover removed and also outlines the procedure for electric or gas operation and some troubleshooting tips:

I hope this helps with your setup, however if the Duetto has a different arrangement then no doubt another owner will be along with the correct solution.

cheers

What year is the Duetto? This will help identify the make of water heater.

/thanks for all the responses.  It is 1994 and the heater is a Carver Cascade 2.  I have now found the switch but it hasn't helped.  I have to put the 12 volt switch down for the switch itself    to work.  I have turned the gas cylinder on and the gas tap.  It says that when the slide switch is pushed down a continuous green light should show indicating it is working normally.  All that happens but no warm water.  I think the noise I can hear is the water pump rather than the gas going on.  The gas works with the fridge and the cooker.  There doesn't seem to be an easily removed cowl, there are 4 screws holding it in place.  Any ideas? Wendy
ps I have just found more paperwork which suggests it could take 30 minutes to heat up so I will try that.

Yes gas heaters are not instant, just like boiling a big kettle (it holds 2 gallons). It sounds as if you have instructions but if needed they can be found here..if you have electric & gas version it is the Cascade GE (gas electric)

1994 the burner probably needs cleaning.take the external exhaust vent off,4 screws.behind is a removeable plate(just lifts off).you can then clean the burner and make certain it is sparking at the igniter.on ours a lot of the holes in the burner had become blocked, cleaned them out and hey presto ignition.
