Gear crunch
Hi folks have a 1998 Auto Sleeper Symphony Peugeot Boxer with only 35000 miles.
Over the last year it has developed a rasping noise when changing from 1st to 2nd gear
if the engine revs are not allowed to drop. Trying to change from 1st to 2nd quickly when taking
off especially on a hill is a very crunchy affair.
Was wondering has anyone experienced anything similar with their van, all other gear changes
are no problem.
Thanks bobeskart

Re: Gear crunch
lots been written on this subject, most commonly its the syncros in the gearbox.
I've had a few fixed costing between 500-700 depending on what parts needed.
you can also go down the route of getting a recon gearbox fitted for around £1000.
Have you had the oil drained out and replaced, its usually a milky white colour where water has mixed with the oil.

any difference first.

Re: Gear crunch
Not all doom and gloom My '95 has never suffered from water in the gearbox while I've owned it (10+ years) but it is used as daily transport.
Your problem could be just clutch pedal adjustment. I have to have my clutch pedal quite a bit higher than the brake pedal to get a decent change.
I also found that a new "genuine Peugeot" cable made a big difference.

Re: Gear crunch
Hi check out the recent posts in the technical section, before spending money on a new or recon gear box, drain and change the gearbox oil but make sure you
put back the original spec oil as indicated in the handbook as later on Peugeot changed the spec which I followed, the result was that when the oil became warm
the viscosity changed resulting in notchy gear changes, replaced with original spec the result was no more notchy gear changes, then adjust your clutch pedal and
then grease the linkage on the gearbox end, and finally if the oil comes out like milk (emulsion)I suggest that you do the scuttle modification (see previous posts)
Good Luck:allthumbz:

Re: Gear crunch
This may or may not work for you, but when I collected my my van, I was crunching the gears up & down the box, but the more I drove it, I came to realise that I wasn't actually pushing the pedal down enough, & before I got it home, the gearchange was perfect, I simply adjusted the seat so I could push the pedal FULLY down, just a case of re-adjusting my driving to suit the 'new' vehicle, sorted
