Dreaded Limp Mode. Empty Dreaded Limp Mode.

Post by Biker51 Sat Oct 15, 2022 5:31 pm

Just returned from a few days away and the Check Engine warning came up and the engine went into Limp Mode. Luckily we were only a mile from home and got back easily.

Following viewing various online chats I discovered a 20 amp fuse had blown in the engine compartment fuse box.

Changed the fuse resulting in the warning message and limp mode both rectifying and I was able to start engine and rev as normal.

Went out for a drive and whilst all was initially OK it all returned after about a mile or so. Limped home and checked fuse which had blown again.

The fuse is highlighted with the red arrow in photo although I cannot find any reference to what it is linked to.

Any technically mind members out here with any ideas before I contact RAC or take it to local garage?

Also is it OK to drive 5 miles to garage in limp mode?[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

I'd change the fuse again and drive it to the garage, if it blows and goes into limp mode, the remainder of 5 miles shouldn't worry it, IMHO

I've driven 18 miles (some on M4) in limp mode. No issue with that.

Def get it checked.

I would be interested to know what the fault turned out to be.

Got the van back yesterday from Mill Road Motors in Christchurch. The fault was a failed glow plug in the vaporiser which shorted to earth and blew the fuse. As I understand it adds vaporised fuel into the diesel particle filter to make it burn hotter when it’s doing a burn off for the sooty particles. £350 for the investigation of fault new vaporiser and labour. Apparently the glow plug is not available as a separate part. Apparently not all of the engines have it.

Thanks, pricey!

at least it's fixed. Nothing worse than a phantom fault.

Cheaper than a new DPF filter

I had what sounded like the same problem as Biker51 at the end of December last year...limp mode on the M1 , 20 miles from home but had to be on a low loader home.
What I find interesting is that my bill was almost identical to Biker51's as follows:
'Diagnose DPF fault
Found fuel Vaporiser unit at fault
Unit cost..£223.96
Labour.....£120.00'
This was at my local, well respected garage.

I just had this very fault although the garage charged me considerably more than you so you got lucky  smile!
