Dreaded Air Lock Empty Dreaded Air Lock

Post by JandL Wed Jul 06, 2022 2:21 pm

Just about to go away - dreaded air lock. Never had a problem before,  after refill - open tap furthest - bathroom seems fine but both sink taps splutter and splutter, pump keeps running.

Might try empty tank and refill with taps open. Read this but never tried before as never had an issue with my method.

A hose did come off last year but has been ok since.

Location not great - might do a total strip down when I return if my old bones can take it.

The design of the water system on many A/S conversions is poor - many have the tank on one side and a sink on the other, and they often take the water pipes up and over the rear doors - which makes airlocks a common problem.

On previous conversions I have made up a "priming rig" comprising a 2l drinks bottle connected to a 2m length of suitable-sized pipe. I used to disconnect the tank outlet pipe (plugging the tank outlet) and connect this to the pipe to the pump. Hold the drinks bottle as high as you can (full of water, of course) and run the pump until it primes properly, then disconnect the rig.

More recently I fitted a cheap inline impeller pump right next to the tank outlet, in the pipe to the main Shurflo pump. I would connect that up temporarily just to fully prime the Shurflo, and then it could be disconnected.
