Re: Fuel consumption
Or cassette needs emptying
5 motorhome now, 4 diesel, one petrol, all, every fill written down and recorded with mileage.
27mpg.
IMHO any better needs the thing put on a trailer!!
If doing significantly better with a modern white van man diesel, which they all are, the engine is being done no favours.
My local van garage tells me virtually all DPF, EGR, and other emmisions related problems he sees is on motorhomes. Virtually never on (same) commercial vans.
Incidentally if he gets a persistent one he does a few laps of the bypass at full throttle in 6th or 5th, lots of revs, full power, almost always cures the problems.
Fuel consumption, therefore cost. IMHO in a 2nd vehicle £30000+ motorhome, is frankly irrelevant.
Hard hat now on🤬

It’s quite relevant when you’ve filled up 6 times in 3 weeks, at £150 a time.

Re: Fuel consumption
Ditto simultaneously 2000 miles in 21\2 weeks, 27mpg.
Option 2, sell it!!!
Whole point of the exercise must be the freedom to go where and when we wish. If that involves long haul, then cost is an entirely predictable factor. EU fuel prices easily found online pre departure, distance approximately known, therefore cost is also.
By way of comparison with the current 21 day motorhome trip, we did a 17 day cruise in January, £7000!!!!!

Re: Fuel consumption
I agree with you Ian, I have never bothered about how much fuel my vehicles use since 1964 when I had my first car, just fill up and drive. After all not much you can do about it, just drive as I like.IanH wrote:Or cassette needs emptying

Mind you might have to get a lighter right foot with current prices.

As does sitting on an A380 in Dubai waiting for take-off to Auckland almost 17 hours away, and being told it's taken on over 300,000 litres of fuel for the trip....IanH wrote:Flying AAR tankers brings it into context

Large ocean going oil tankers … 12.5 inches per gallon and a fuel tank that holds 5.5 million gallons !

Re: Fuel consumption
Back on topic. I've just worked out the fuel used on our 2,400 mile tour around France, no on board computer or apps, just the brim and zero trip method. 2lt HDI engine with 63k on the clock, no fast toll roads, rarely exceed 65mph, average 30MPG.

Re: Fuel consumption
I have not checked my consumption since 2019 to see if it’s improved with age, but it was no better than 26.5mpg back then.

Re: Fuel consumption
Regarding smell,It can be when the window is closed but can be "induced" by opening the window.
I had appointed wife as bloodhound to route out source of stink as we motored. First point sniff under rear bed where the leisure baths are, nowt, next stop loo,we did have leaks from here before but again nothing, battery in footwell checked with cover off..nothing.
Paul,my original suspicion was the battery but a drop test showed it holding good voltage under load and a rapid recovery, engine running and voltage to battery 14v dropping too 13.50 at 2500rpm and no smell. I wanted to check each cell for level ,it has screw caps, but it would mean disconnection and the thought of maybe loosing some settings deterred me.
I had wondered about the PDF clearing itself would that produce a sulphury smell?

Re: Fuel consumption
This is an endlessly recurring theme, which somewhat amuses me.
Essentially we all drive more or less the same vehicles with the same engines, rare exceptions.
3500Kg, 6 to 7 m long, all equally dreadful aerodynamically.
Three schools of thought re calculating Mpg.
1 And the cynical me says most common....pure guess!!
2 relying on onboard computer data.
3 Using the only accurate method, recorded fuel into tank to full against recorded miles from odometer.
Yet we end up with essentially 2 answers!
27mpg or 35 mpg.
Explanations on back of fag packet please!!
(BTW 27 is correct answer!!!!)

Off topic but just had to tell.....Suppersready wrote:Large ocean going oil tankers … 12.5 inches per gallon and a fuel tank that holds 5.5 million gallons !
Read a book by a guy tramping on a Maersk container ship.
The guy tells that they switch to high sulphur (cheaper fuel) when a few miles off the coast and the pollution output from that one vessell/trip,Amsterdam to China if IRC, was the equivalent of the total annual output of Denmark , home of Maersk, in a year.
Sorry, back on topic now.

So, neighbour chap stepped up and offered to check batt levels as he has a battery keeper and.. they all look good with no bubbling under discharge or load.
Breather tube is clear too.

Does your van use Adblue? If my van is anything to go by, regeneration of the DPF can cause a rotten egg type smell, and if you have the selective catalytic reduction (Adblue) system it may be more likely.
However... if that is the source, you shouldn't be able to smell it while travelling along - the exhaust outlet is too far back for that to be likely, unless you have a bad seal on a rear door.
It may be worth checking the exhaust system for slight leaks. On a diesel they are typically quite easy to see, as they leave significant soot deposits if they have been leaking for any length of time.

Re: Fuel consumption
Just did a brim to brim calculation with mixed driving so fill cost £99.53 for 49.83 ltr. So for my calculation that's 39mpg which ties up with on-board reading.

Re: Fuel consumption
You shouldn't need heating at this time of year, so if you only switch on water heating for maybe an hour first thing for showering etc and only use one gas ring for cooking, and boil a kettle for drinks and evening washing up, it will last 2 to 3 weeks or even longer. Heating is the biggest user, fridge uses negligible amount.Dave/Pat wrote:we will be soon off on our first trip in our new to us 2019 Symbol ,.we will keep records of Fuel l,p,g and water usage we will stop at a friends when we arrive in Scotland .. fill up with water and the rest is a new adventure .. we hope we get the 33 Mpg ... any one comment on how long the LPG will last .we will be off grid .?
Be aware that Scotland isn't that flushed with autogas outlets so worth topping up whenever you see it and you gauge shows you can get some in.
