BOXER 2.2hdi mpg
Hello, sorry if this has come up a few times before but I have recently acquired a Symbol with a Boxer 2.2HDI engine the X244.
On a recent trip I filled up for the first time, after taking out a mortgage! I estimate the MPG to be around 32 since I collected it.
I will be able to make a more accurate check now, but I wondered, as manufacturers figures are always suspect, what the forum reckons is a fair consumption for this model driven sensibly.
Regards
David

I have the same engine in my Nuevo so it's not a van conversion like yours and I reckon to get 30mpg.

Hi
I get about 27mpg at 70 to 75. But at 55 to 60 I can get 34mpg.

Hi, its always about how you drive and the traffic.
25 to 35 covers 90 % of Motorhomes.
remember speedos are not that accurate and your filling method could make a difference as well.

Mike

2.2 engine fuel consumption
Seems like everyone is getting about the same so I am just confirming that I'm the same. Driving sensibly and doing 60 mph on the Motorways I get about 34 mpg.

Re: BOXER 2.2hdi mpg
I drive at just under 70 on the motorway - the Peugeot Boxer seems happy at that.
The boss drives at about 75 - just a few extra mph makes the noise levels go up and the mpg come down noticeably. She won't be told...

Re: BOXER 2.2hdi mpg
erm.. Mikethebike...... I hesitate to ask for fear of "going viral" on this forum as being one litre short of a full tank, but when you say "your filling method could make a difference as well" you dont really mean to say that lighter or firmer squeeze of finger pressure on the pump trigger, or standing Jethro Tull like on one leg whilst holding the hose, or talking kindly (Prince Charles style to his plants) to the fast gushing fuel, or even the oh so cool technique of holding the hose behind your back as you fill can ACTUALLY MAKE A DIFFERENCE TO THE MPG??!!mikethebike wrote:Hi, its always about how you drive and the traffic.

Come on do tell all? What is your filling technique that increases fuel consumption by 5%? We deserve to know!!!

Re: BOXER 2.2hdi mpg
Hi, well if you are trying to work to 0 .1 mpg as many are reporting ,you need to fill to exactly the same level between measurements and cover a decent milage between checks.
However the variation in speedo error ,usually around 5 % overreading ,makes more difference.
A light right foot will give you the best mpg figure regardless of model type/size or fuel used.
I speak from having come third in a Mobil Economy run in the 60ties.

Re: BOXER 2.2hdi mpg
I think I understand what Mike is driving at.
With petrol you can run dry, put a gallon in and run dry again, simples!
I use the fill to brim method, then fill to brim again and it's here that Mike has point.
How often have we squeezed an extra 1/2 Litre or more in after the pump cutout has triggered.
Or the next time not bothered.
If, as Mike says we calculate to .1 of Mpg then this will make a difference to the result.
In the end, it depends on how picky you want to be.
I am beginning to wonder if I should have started this one!, though I suspect it will have been aired here before my time on the Forum

Re: BOXER 2.2hdi mpg
Hi David, I might put this to bed. I bought a brand new Swift 590rs in 1999. 1.9 td.Since sold.
I have recorded every fuel litre put in. .
49 fuel checks. Best 34.8 worse 20.8. Average 25. Those extremes can be mistakes.
only 3 above 30 and only 4 below 23.
One driver.22,652 miles covered.
To get an average you need a few recordings!!
regards

Ah I get it now - the filling method! All to do with consistency in filling the tank to get a true comparison and nothing to do with how you hold the petrol pump or whether you stand on one foot or two after all! Clears that one up! I had hoped someone else would ask the (dumb?) question as I was intrigued.

Re: BOXER 2.2hdi mpg
I took my Symbol to the South of France towing a very large box trailer full of furniture and assorted junk. We seemed to have a head wind all the way, dropped to 3rd on some motorway climbs and got an average of 17 mpg. Average speed was probably 50 - 55. 65 was occasionally seen downhill, but 70 was just a dream. Coming back we also seemed to have a headwind but the trailer was empty so we were up to the dizzy heights of nearly 25 mpg. A very expensive trip!!!

Jethro Tull filling method
What a great idea! I'm for the Jethro Tull method. I think we should all adopt this method at service stations instead of waving to each other on the road. Rather like holding up a sandal (Life of Brian) style. Wise words mate.pablo wrote:Ah I get it now - the filling method! Re: BOXER 2.2hdi mpg
Hi
Just finished my first long run test on my Harmony 1.9 and did 190 miles mixed driving towns villages dual carriageways etc and a bit of stop start traffic jams, and refilled to the brim with 21.23 ltrs giving around 40.77 mpg.
I was pleased with that.
I have always managed to get better fuel economy than normal stated figures on my vehicles with my style of driving.
Although having motor raced I wasnt trying to beat too many GTIs away from the lights or flashing BMWs in the fast lane at 85mph!
Lets see what the next trip brings.

Re: BOXER 2.2hdi mpg
I must admit that it is something that I have never worried about, I get told when and where we are going and I am expected to get the ayatola, van and me there. I always have a great time when we are away and actually enjoy driving the Symbol. Nothing beats finding a good view and stopping for a brew in your own van.
If you start to worry about the costs like fuel, road tax, van purchase price, tyres, m-o-t, insurance, site fees you may as well stop in a premier Inn.

Re: BOXER 2.2hdi mpg
Hi,
I certainly dont worry about it but I have to do my travelling on a very tight budget so things like this must be considered and maximised where possible, the better my mpg and the more I keep costs down the more weekends I can have away enjoying Fanny.

Re: BOXER 2.2hdi mpg
After spending £50k on a van who cares about the fuel you use and as for .1mpg what is going on.
Just enjoy it, saying that we got about 28mpg on cruise on the motorways at 70 with a/con on during 3000mls to the south of France in May in our Warwick 150bhp.
Just don't look at the display when pulling away ie 8 mpg

Er, rgerman, if you look at the age of lots of member's vans you'll see not everyone here has spent 50K on a van! I also enjoy cruising around the continent for weeks on end, enjoying the scenery without caring too much about the fuel consumption, and I only spent less than a third of 50k on the van purchase. I prefer to let others take the massive hit of depreciation over the first two or three years of new van ownership.

Bikeralw, Point taken, just that I often seem to get behind the guy who records every drop of fuel he puts in the tank at the pump, while he gets the calculator out and records it on paper.
Maybe I should write down every pint I have.
Roll on electric vans.
