Rust Empty Rust

Post by Paulwest55 Fri Jun 10, 2016 10:49 am

Hi can anyone tell us does the autosleepers Harmony and Symbol from the 1995 to 2000 era suffer the same rust problems that the Duettos of the date do? Also what if any are the things to look out for on them. Cheers for your help and advice.

The Boxer based vans' areas to watch are the sills, rear spring hangers and the front cross-member (though this is an easy replacement to do or get done as it really only holds the radiator in place). Other things to watch are gearbox through water ingress, watch it doesn't jump out of gear and for synchro problems.

You will see "suspension component mounting prescribed area is excessively corroded" on previous mot's as failures or advisories being fairly common on Boxers of this era (including the van I bought but repair is good in my case). Just check repairs have been done and done well. I got a local garage to check mine.

Also worth checking in the engine bay for rust in and around the battery tray too, saw a few with that when I was looking. And check the front wheel arches, especially where the plastic liner is attached.

The spare wheel carriers also rust badly but this is an easily removed and refurbished component.

I would suggest anyone buying an older motorhome checks for rust before actually going inside where you might fall in love with it and just have to have it
