Re: tdi engine in a Trident
From a driver's point of view, probably the best engine ever fitted to a T4, though yours would be the lowest power variant. It should not be too expensive to have it remapped for higher power if you need it for towing, for example.
It's also the worst for fuel economy, but not by a massive amount, and IMO the pleasure of driving a 5-cylinder more than compensates for that. It is a relatively complex engine though, and it ~must~ be regularly maintained using the correct oil - more so than any other T4 engine. It's unusual in that the top end is gear-driven, so no cambelt to change, ever...

Are you sure about that? I could well be wrong but i THOUGHT that the 2.5 Tdi fitted to the T4s did have a timing belt - wheras the 2.5Tdi fitted to the T5s did not (complex gears etc). As I say - i could be wrong!

Re: tdi engine in a Trident
I know very little about the complexities of the various VW power plants but 88bhp for a turbocharged 2.5 litre seems very low? or is there a missprint?

The 2.5TDi is generally considered a very good engine.
Unless I'm very much mistaken, it does have a cambelt (plus a fuel injector drive belt), which need changing every 4 years - check when it was last done.
88BHP from a 2.5TDi does sound low by modern standards, but I guess VW were prioritising reliability over speed. As has been mentioned, a remap to upgrade power is a possibility.

Re: tdi engine in a Trident
88 or 102 (better)
Does have a cambelt and must use 10W-40 (Magnatec A3/B4 part synthetic for VW's preferable) oil, 5.5 litres. Beware garages thinking it is the T5 lump and putting 7 litres in!!
Our Clubman had the 102bhp 2.5TDi and went very well!

Re: tdi engine in a Trident
Ah, ok. I'd always assumed that the T5's 2.5Tdi was a continuation of the T4, but apparently not! Oh well, no complex gears then!
88 BHP isn't that low for that generation of engines - IIRC my Transit 2.5 Tdi was at least 10 BHP less, and it was fine...
