Power Steering Empty Power Steering

Post by Jeff and Di Giblin Fri Jul 29, 2011 7:06 pm

Hi everyone,

Well, we got back from our recent short break on Exmoor, well, limped back more like!

It was all going so well, but on leaving our Symphony after parking I noticed an ominous line of fresh oil following it into the parking space. A look underneath confirmed our worst fears, it did belong to us!
A call to Green Flag was required, and the breakdown truck turned up after about 20 mins. which was pretty good. The mechanic quickly diagnosed a split pipe on the servo, not fixable at the roadside, so we were loaded onto the recovery truck, and taken back to the garage. It being nearly knocking off time, nothing could be done, and so we were faced with a bit of unplanned "Wild Camping" on a nearby trading estate! Needless to say, the night passed restlessly, but without incident, and we were at the garage by 8am. Two new pipes were prefabricated, and we were back on the road, but at a cost of £150! However, we were warned that the high pressure flexible hoses from pump to servo were also heavily corroded and likely to blow at any time, but as they are Peugot specific, were not available off the shelf. So, more work to be done.
All this is by way of saying that we will be having everything "below the waterline" checked out as soon as we can, and that a new MOT and a Dealer "Service" doesn't mean everything is okay.

Still, the habitation all worked well, on our first outing without a hook up, and we look forward to more.

That must have been a worrying time for you. You are right to get the van checked out so that you can regain confidence. After a while such calamities as this will fade in the memory and become just experiences.

I don't understand why a split servo pipe would cause the power steering to leak confused3 but you can probably get pipes made up by a hydraulic specialist which will replace the Peugeot ones - Peugeot don't make pipes, they just build vans/cars from bits biggrin you could try PIRTEK [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

Hi Jeff and Di
It must be the season for split servo pipes. Have you read about my experience here

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

I fitted the pipe myself yesterday and now everythings fine

Cheers
