Radio change Empty Radio change

Post by Stationerystill Mon Jan 13, 2014 6:44 pm

Hi
I bought a new digital radio for my 2005 Peugeot Boxer and it appeared to work o.k. but when I switched it off and back on the preset stations were lost. I took it back and got another one. Same problem. I then put a test meter on all the cables on the standard plug
and found that Peugeot/Fiat cables are not wired up in the same way as a standard radio. Pin 4 which should go to the battery goes to the ignition and pin 7 which should go to the ignition goes to the battery. The answer is to swap them round. Is it possible the vehicle makers do this to stop owners purchasing other radio makes? Has anybody else had the same problem?
regards

It's a very common problem, not confined to those makes of vehicle.

I don't think it's part of any deliberate ploy - they have more complex ways to make fitting after-market headunits difficult (e.g. integrating the radio into the van's Controller Area Network, as it is on my van).

Yep, me too, I simply wired in a constant positive feed to the radios memory, been fine since.

Hi Stationarystill,
Not a deliberate ploy. I expect your wiring system may vary from one model to another!
Did you get a wiring diagram with your handbook?
    I doubt it.

Hi Mike
Yes I have the vehicle radio wiring diagram and the radio wiring diagram.
That is how I discovered the difference, and then I checked with my test meter. It is strange to a a standard plug for a radio with different pin positions.

Whilst you are swapping wires, it might be worth feeding the radio from the leisure battery, that way you can have it on all the time and not flatten the starter battery.
