Jerking Peugeot symphony auto-sleeper
Hi just bought a 1996 peougot boxer 1998cc petrol autoslleeper. When I get warm it starts jerking if running out of fuel and it start to idle very roughly increasing/degreasing speed (hunting). I am complete novice and be thankfully for any help suggestions .Paul

Hi Paul, welcome to the forum.
I think your problem might be the idle stepper motor, look here:

BTW. It would be good if you could tell us a bit about yourself in the introductions section, you may get better responses to your queries if you do

Sorry not sure why the phase inappropriate word has appeared. The van runs when warmed up then dies for split second ,which is getting much worse

Dirty fuel or water in fuel? Was it standing for a while before you got it? The idler stepper Frank mentions is more likely though.

the forum software thinks you've said a rude word.Plynch2002 wrote:Sorry not sure why the phase inappropriate word has appeared.
A rough gist of the idle system:The van runs when warmed up then dies for split second ,which is getting much worse
The idle system is not controlled by the throttle butterfly, but by a cone which is moved in or out of a bypass orifice in the inlet manifold, thus making it larger or smaller to control the amount of air going into the engine.
When the engine is cold and on "fast idle" the cone is pulled back, out of the way, but when the engine is at operating temperature, the cone is almost blocking the bypass off. If the stepper motor sticks, it doesn't react fast enough to keep the engine going when the butterfly closes.
It might not be the stepper motor, you need to read the whole thread.

Looks like this when it's out:
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
Only one connector plug at the bottom.
Only paper book that I know of is the Peter Russek one and they ain't too detailed about the fuel system.

Re: Jerking Peugeot symphony auto-sleeper
If the plugs are sooty after a decent run then it sounds like a fuelling problem - running too rich. Could be one (or more) of a host of problems, Air temp sensor, lambda sensor etc. etc..

Re: Jerking Peugeot symphony auto-sleeper
Hi all. I've revived this old thread because the 'missed heartbeat' symptoms are precisely the problem we have with our 1998 Symphony. It has been to our local garage four times now trying to resolve it but so far to no avail and the problem has now stopped us from using our van. I've been reading about the problems associated with faulty or sticking Stepper Motors and this does seem to chime with the problems we're having.
May I ask, Plynch2002, if your problem was resolved and, if so, what was it? We're at our wits end now so any help will be very gratefully received.
Thanks in advance
Paul

Re: Jerking Peugeot symphony auto-sleeper
I did wonder. Thanks Paul. I'll suggest the stepper motor next time the van is in the garage - because I know there will be a next time!
