Cooker Igniter Empty Cooker Igniter

Post by andygump Thu Jul 11, 2013 1:32 am

Hi,

For the past year the igniter on my cooker has been itermittent.   Now it has packed in altogether   I have tried a new micro switch and it has made no difference.        Now it has given up all together and I have to resort back to the old matchstick.        Could it be the thermocouple?.

Cheers

Cooker Igniter Empty Re: Cooker Igniter

Andy,
It is almost certainly NOT the thermocouple.
The thermocouple is the device which keeps the gas valve open once the flame has ignited and for as long as the flame continues to burn.

If the igniter is not working then that is a different issue altogether.
There are a number of possibilities:
1. No battery voltage (some cookers use a small 1.5v battery to power the piezo igniter - check how yours is powered and if power is present)
2. The gap from the tip of the igniter to the metal of the burner is too big for the spark to 'jump' - like car spark plugs the gap does increase with use
3. The igniter is actually working and the problem is there is no gas supply to lite - Check you have gas flow whilst you are holding the gas valve in the 'ignite' position

Hi Backtrax

The Spinflo Hobb igniter is supplied by the 12v system not a separate Battery.   When I measured the supply to the micro switch it was showing 11.9 to 12v  but the LB is showing 13v.   The gas supply is OK.

lightly emery the tip of the igniter and the point of contact.they get covered in grease very easily.hopefully that should help it did on mine.it costs nothing and did the trick on ours.  good luck g.

What the others have said plus carefully check the insulator of the sparking electrode for cracks or chips. If there's a crack there will be dirt/moisture in it and the spark will track down it rather than jump the gap to the burner. I don't have electronic ignition on the cooker in the van but I do have exactly the same problem (cracked insulator) on one ring of the cooker at home.

Hi Guys,

Still no joy with the igniter.       Power to the two connections going to the micro switch but no sparks at the burners.

Cheers
