Was this nearly a fire?
I noticed this stain on one of the downlighters the other day
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
So I had a look
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
It doesn't look that bad until you remove the bulb
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
The stain on the glass is from melted reflector, the lamps are only 10W, I had a look at the others and the thing I noticed was the ones that are alright have the lamp angled away from the reflector, there were two like this and both lamps were angled the other way, if ever there was an argument for LED's I think this is it!

What was the wattage of the lamp that you removed, i wonder? I see 10W max on the fitting. Just a thought

fire?
Yes it could have caught fire or set fire to soft furnishings. I think that halogens are far too hot for motorhomes and encourage people to use LED's.

Re: Was this nearly a fire?
Oooooh! "Near-Miss" by any standards!
I agree with both Posts. The key being that even with the right wattage bulb it still needs fitting properly.
Personally, I found that all four fluorescent tubes in "Petal" were suffering from melted covers and back-plates when I changed them all out for LED's.
There is a massive Thread on how to do it so search "LED" and you will find a lot of information.
Best regards,

Re; near fire
The wattage is 10W the same as the rest, exactly as it left the factory, apart from the melted reflector of course.

Re: Was this nearly a fire?
Yes; that was a near-miss.
I have replaced all the "factory-fitted" lights with LEDs, apart from the Halogen "reading lights", which we now do not use, due to excessive heat generated. I have bought several types of LED spot-light from e-bay but, so far, have not found one which will fit into the reading-light fitting.
I suppose that I should look at a current Topaz, because I can't believe that they are still utilising 1980s-tech lighting to their current products.
Cheers,
Pete.

Hi there,
I replaced the six down-lights with these:
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
They are not cheap but it's just a case of "one out - one in" and the light quality is great.
The top photograph is to show you what you will be replacing! (It confused me a bit at first; but then again, I am easily confused!)

I have only one down-lighter so having read this thread, I thought I might change it for one of those but the link shows 'out of stock' - typical!

Dutto,
Do your down-lighters have a piece of glass covering the lamp? Mine do and the type of LEDs which you linked are too big to fit in- if you compare the distance between the pins on the two images, then you can see that they are not shown to the same scale. I did find some which would fit but their output was feeble! I also found some fantastic LEDs which give just the right amount of spread an light but they are too big also and I can't get the cover to fit.
Cheers,
Pete.

Hi there,
"Yes." they have glass covers and "Yes." they fitted just fine.
All I did was to spread the pins slightly and after 5,000 miles none of them have shaken loose or failed to light.
Best regards,
Ian

Re: Was this nearly a fire?
Dutto,
Sound like you have the solution, but I'm getting an out of stock message too. However, I have just ordered a couple of these:
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
According to the dimensions given, they will fit through the hole in my reflectors and also length-wise. I'll report back if they work out.
I now have enough G4 LEDs and holders to make a 12v set of Christmas lights!!!
Cheers,
Pete.

Ah, the joys of DIY!!
According to my better half I have two or more of everything (with obvious exceptions ); and then can't find one when I need it!
Enjoy.
Best regards,
Ian

Re: Was this nearly a fire?
The LEDs I linked to two posts up have arrived, they fit and they give a nice bright white light; not cold blue, or warm white but just right for reading. Finally, a solution!
EDIT: in my unbridled excitement about having found what I was looking for I forgot to point out that the LEDs which work for me will not be any use to the starter of this thread. His lamps fit into the connector sideways, whilst mine push straigt in- into where the melted bit is in the photo. Ithink that the best solution for the type of fitting the OP has would be the flat, round LEDs with side pins. This sort of thing:

Although you should check the dimensions for your particular fittings.
Now; about the awning hurricane lantern I converted to LEDs, which is as bright as the South Stack lighthouse.............
