There was a thread on here about carrying a surfboard on the roof ,I don't want to drill into my roof any ideas cheers matt

The pop-top on mine is narrow enough that you can still access the roof rails, but you don't have a lot of options on a Trooper.

I'd either be looking to rack it inside under the roof, and store it under the van when on site, or possibly modify a bike rack to mount it vertically behind the van?

Adds another 10 foot to your length though, and rolling resistance of another set of wheels (although lightly loaded, so not a big deal there I'd guess).

I'd own a trailer myself if I had somewhere convenient to store it where it wouldn't get nicked...

Great idea for a car, but a Trooper's only got a door on one side at the back!

But thinking about it, if it's a hard-sided pop-top (almost all were), you could drop one side panel, half-drop the other side panel and run the fixing strap under the roof top panel, then close the roof, then tie on the surf board. I'd be very careful tightening the straps like that though, as you could damage the roof "skirt" without a lot of effort...
