Thanks Peter, I have just done exactly that, bought a good length of decent coax and bypassed the van's system and it is the best signal wI have ever had, so the fault is in the van's wiring somewhere - I was fixating on the multimeter readings, instead of checking the rest! Thanks for braving the cold.

Thanks Peter, that is very informative! It is set up differently than I imagined, having seen pics of the innards of the "flying saucer" type. They are pretty basic for the amount you pay aren't they? Thanks again,
