EARTH STRAP ON BOXER>>> Empty EARTH STRAP ON BOXER>>>

Post by troikafloyd Sat Oct 20, 2012 8:37 pm

shrugg Can anyone advise me whether it's ok to use a new battery earth lead (round) to replace the braided earth strap which earths the starter motor on my Boxer (2004) Diesal. I ask because I believe it is the strap that has caused the problems I've had with starting the engine. As some of you know from my previous post there has been sparks coming from where the strap is situated. I tried to locate a strap in my local area but could only get the battery earth cable, can I presume as long as it is earthed etc?

Yes indeed. But check that the old one is the cause of the problem. If it is, it should literally fall apart if you pull hard on it.

And if it ~is~ the cause, ask yourself why it failed. Worn engine/gearbox mounts causing too much engine movement?

Hi,
The round type is not as flexible as a braided strap and could not absorb the movement of the engine in relation to the chassis, but as a temporary fix it should be ok,
Regards,

EARTH STRAP ON BOXER>>> Empty engine earth strap

Is the strap actually faulty, or is it just a bad conection. When I had this problem I just disconnected both ends, cleaned up the ends and under the bolts it was attached to and put it back, then it worked fine.

I've just caught up with this thread. As I posted before we had the same problem and it was completely cured by cleaning up the original lead and refitting it to a different bolt on the engine.
