Power Steering Empty Power Steering

Post by Jules 132 Sun Nov 17, 2024 7:21 pm

Hi

About once a month or so I have the following warning flash up just before starting the van.

“have power steering checked, see handbook”

I have 2013 Autosleeper Dorset.  I’ve checked the power steering fluid and it’s full so not a problem there. I also don’t lose power steering as the light goes off when engine is on and as I said above, most times doesn’t come back on for another month. Has anyone else had this happen?

You may get some more hints about the underlying cause by plugging in a diagnostic code reader. It's probably a sensor complaining about something, but the warning message is a bit too vague to infer much.

Note that a cheap OBDII code reader may not be very useful in this situation - the cheap ones are really only designed for the standardised part of OBD - which is essentially about emissions controls, which this won't be related to. You need a code reader that can access all of the vehicle control modules and, ideally interpret them into text (though it's not a major issue if it just gives you a fault code - they are easy enough to find on the internet, generally).
