Extra batteries in 2024 Symbol.
Have any of you guys with a late model Symbol managed to fit an extra battery/ies under the driver's seat?
I would like to know if it's possible before taking things apart, I managed it on my old Symbol but then the seat didn't have the swivelling mechanism.
Also, another question....I know with lead acid that an extra battery should be same age, same make & same strength, But does this apply to lithium? can one add another of a different rating?
As you've probably gathered, I'm a total twit when it comes to electricity!

Has your van got the latest dc to dc charging and the 100 amp/hr lifo battery, if you have the dc to dc charger can only handle up to 160 amp batteries.

I don’t think I have a B2B.Bendog wrote:Has your van got the latest dc to dc charging and the 100 amp/hr lifo battery, if you have the dc to dc charger can only handle up to 160 amp batteries.
I already have an extra 100ah lithium & an extra 80w solar panel, but still ran out of juice after 4 days in the New Forest.
I’m looking to add yet another battery.

Apologies if I’ve misunderstood things but you say you have an “extra 100ah lithium battery” and an extra “80W solar panel”.
May I ask what your power requirements are as that setup would last me indefinitely and I’m not exactly frugal with my power usage.

In your case, I suspect your solar is being fed to the batteries via Sargent controller.
You will get far better performance from your considerable set up by fitting a separate solar controller and connecting it direct to the batteries...
With your set-up you could be doing on site arc welding!!! We have just 130w solar and one 110Ah lead acid battery and can operate off grid more or less indefinitely.......

I was reading that you have added another solar panel and IanH suggested setting up a separate solar controller.
IanH also suggested that your set could "arc weld". Is it not possible that the original solar cabling is not man enough for your solar panels and batteries which you have??

My arc welding comment was meant to be humourous! I was saying there was enough energy in it to start an arc welding company!!
That said, and more seriously, the cable sizing on lots of motorhome wiring could be increased to advantage.....

Since you mention it, the Rawlplug company made a small arc welding tool about 50 years ago that ran off a 12 volt battery, and it worked, after a fashion!
Cable sizing was one of my thoughts on this topic. OK, AS are fitting B2B’s now, but how are they wiring them up and does the wiring still disappear into the Sargent? A B2B needs well sized cables to work efficiently, as does anything around 12 volts.

12V 200A Heavy Duty Relay
From 12v planet, my new ,and only split charge relay, not having to feed the fridge now we have a 12v only one directly connected to the LB, which is, of course, being charged by this when driving.
Cabling to suit!

Slightly off topic but, are AS still supplying vans in 2024 with smart alternators and split charging?
