Paint on Boxer roof is rather thin
I taped something on to the roof for a few days. When I removed the tape, it has pulled the paint off.
Obviously this is on the roof so not huge aesthetic issue but there is some kind of undercoat showing. I guess this is kind of rust protection.
I am thinking the area is too large for touch up brush?
Is there any advice as to what I should do?

Re: Paint on Boxer roof is rather thin
I thought they'd sorted this years ago. I was aware of this peeling paint on vans from around 2009 to 2013 , wasn't aware of it still being a problem on later vans. It's apparently the use of water based topcoat not adhering to oil based primer.
Last week I went under a low hanging twig and although only a light touch, I lost an area about 6cm by 2cm of paint above windscreen. Thankfully mine isn't metallic and touch up paint is quite a good match.

I have a couple of patches like that on my 2013 Aurosleeper Dorset which I have just bought and wondered what the dull under paint was and if it will rust quickly if I don’t get it painted.

Re: Paint on Boxer roof is rather thin
My van is now 14 years old and all paint loss has been above tops of windows eg on roof seams and above windscreen but today I've just discovered several separate patches of paint loss on the sills. Why this has suddenly appeared is a mystery. I've got anti-chip spray and was going to use that but I'm scared that masking tape will peel even more paint off so I'll get some brush on anti-chip and do the full length of the sills. Hopefully get it done in the next few days as long as the rain stays away.

My problem is that I never realised that paint could peel off like that so I didn't take any precautions.
I used strong adhesive tape and just ripped it off.
The body panel looks like a sheet of aluminium and I just treated it like it was a sheet of metal.
My bad but Lesson learned.
My worry is rust but the undercoat/primer is intact so I think I have got away it.
It's only the roof afterall.
I got touchup aerosol from Peugeot today, and if that looks really bad, I can put a sticker over it.

That is the point though it shouldn't. I wouldn't go blaming yourself!AutoSleepy_Don wrote:My problem is that I never realised that paint could peel off like that so I didn't take any precautions.

“It’s only the roof after all.”
I was just thinking a week or so ago how thin the roof plating is when I was drilling holes for my new solar panel brackets. Also how many water traps there are! I wonder how many roofs rust through?
In your case the affected area is clearly not a water trap, but I am watching one area near my roof rails where the top coat of paint has lifted off. I am hoping that what I am seeing is the zinc coating that these vans are supposedly protected with, but I don’t know whether that is the whole body inc. roof or just up to a certain level, but perhaps somebody knows the answer to that? Anyway, that will have to be painted since it is over an undulating area of seams.
What I have done with great success on another car I own is mask some minor damage and protect the tail gate threshold etc. using vinyl wrap tape. You can buy narrow rolls of this wrap material (mine was 100mm wide I think) in various colours. It won’t work on heavily contoured areas but would work in your case. I bought black tape for my black car and it is virtually indiscernible. I suspect you could buy a silver colour which might be a very close match to your van colour. Amazon do it.
