Towing with a Symbol
Hi all,
Well the first of my questions is, what is the maximum towing weight for a Symbol (or the Orion) equivalent?
We rather fancy a Symbol when we have got the pennies together, but we would like to tow a box trailer with our bike in it. That would make the bike rallies we attend a lot more fun and comfortable.
Many thanks in advance,
Ken

Re: Towing with a Symbol
Hi there,
I presume that you are not looking at carrying anything bigger than a Honda Goldwing (Dry Weight +/- 350kgs).
You can load this on an un-braked trailer with a total weight (i.e. trailer and load) of not more than 750kgs which is well within the 2,000kgs to 2,500kgs (depending on the model) of the AS Symbol.
Hope this helps.
Best regards,
PS Maybe "Granny" and "eggs" but just remember that with an un-braked trailer you HAVE to allow a lot longer stopping distance!!

Hi Dutto,
Many thanks for your reply and don't worry about Grannies and eggs, It's always worth a mention just in case. I have towed both braked and unbraked in the past and always allow more time for stopping to be on the safe side.
Nice to know that what we are looking at will serve the purpose though.
Thanks again and ttfn

I tow a 750kg (loaded) box twin wheeled trailer (unbraked).
Don't even know it's there really.

PB,
I often heard the same comment when I was a policeman; attending accidents where someone had run into the back of the car in front!
Mines a rum and coke!

Re: Towing with a Symbol
Can anyone enlighten me as to the law regarding towing with the motorhome, mine is rated at 3500kg, & I can take approx 2-300kg payload.
I have a small, braked, twin axle 8ft x 5ft x 6ft high box trailer which is also rated at 3500kg, & I can easily get the big bike in & maybe even the smaller
one as well, so, am I allowed to pull this with the M/H?? Each bike is around 220kg. If so, that would be great

Towing
Hi Modelman,
On the weight plate for your MH there should be a train weight, this is the highest figure on the plate probably the 4th line, this is the maximum total weight of vehicle trailer and load. Load them up and get the combination weighed.

Re: Towing with a Symbol
We tow a small braked trailer tent with our Symbol. Had a standard tow bar fitted, and a after a slight modification to the existing step brackets, can remove the step for towing. When the step is replaced, it looks exactly as it was before the tow bar was fitted. Carry the step inside the van whilst towing and replace when on site.

Re: Towing with a Symbol
I regularly tow 2 pre 65 Trials bikes probably a total weight of 250 kg of bikes on an unbraked trailer, behind a car. Car pulls it OK, hardly notice the extra weight, but when stopping hard I can definitely notice a difference. I wouldn't be happy pulling anything heavier on an unbraked trailer.
Take it safe and get a braked trailer then you'll have no issues. Makes a significant difference when stopping.

I'm interested in fitting a towbar on my Symbol. Is it possible to see a picture of your set up?
Thanks.

Re: Towing with a Symbol
Phew, a bit complicated to explain, but I'll have a go. Not sure of the tow bar make as it was fitted five years ago. You'll also need to be able to weld or know a friendly blacksmith.
The Standard tow bar is fitted by removing the four step bolts, and using the same bolts, fit the tow bar which lines up as a perfect fit.
two lengths of rectangular tubing are required, one which will slide inside the other. 40mm x 60mm.
The existing step angle iron needs to be cut as shown in the first picture, and a length of tubing welded on to each leg. The step then needs to be offered up to the tow bar, to determine the location that the larger sleeved tubing needs to be welded on. Once In place the step is secured by a 8mm grub screw.
A small cut out below the step may be needed to clear the tow ball..
