Rear door Weight loading Empty Rear door Weight loading

Post by orac Thu Feb 16, 2023 3:08 pm

I have a bike rack fitted to the O/S rear door. I have been trying to discover, without success anywhere, what max weight the rear door can take. I usually use a Fiamma Cargo Luggage Box (the black flexible one with frame) on the bike rack, filled with the mucky stuff such as EHU cable, water hose, waste hose etc. But I am acutely aware of how flimsy the door is, so I do not want to overload it. Any info gratefully received (apart from don't do it).

I remember reading the max weight load in one of our handbooks but I can’t remember if it was the Peugeot or the AS book. It’s to do with the weight the hinges can take.

As a ballpark figure, Thule reckon you can load their barn door bike rack with bikes weighing 19kg, for a total weight of 35kg (although I think the Thule version we have fitted allows for more weight than that!)

Can't imagine the fiamma model differing greatly from that figure.

On re-reading the spec, I now think the max weight on the rack is the 35kg figure, with the max individual bike weight being 19kg.

Further down the spec list shows the rack weight as 9.5kg.

I seem to recall the max weight on the door hinges is less than that of the bike rack plus it’s load.

The door hinge weight capacity is what I am also trying to discover. Thanks to all replies so far

One point not mentioned is what the hinges can handle with the door open and the rack still loaded compared to closed.
As a rough estimate, I fitted the Thule rack to my van and I’m confident that it can easily handle 2 regular bikes around the 15kg mark, possibly more but I’ve never tested the theory.
However, I always remove the bikes upon arrival on site before opening the rear doors, hanging even just one off the door with it open is asking for trouble IMO.
