Tow bar bike rack for ebikes
Hi any recommendations for a towbar mounted bike rack for a Kingham?
As we need to use the rear doors it would need to be able to fold or tilt/slide. The tow bar itself will be removable rather than permanent unit
We want to carry 2 ebikes and so require a load capacity of c115- 120kg
Thanks

Do you have a tow bar fitted already? If so, is it S-rated to 120kg?

I use this one, if it helps on a Nuevo for 2 ebikes not sure if it will tilt enough for you? [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
I believe some use a swing away system for panel vans, and I think it was mentioned somewhere on this forum?

On our Kingham we use the Altera Strada for 3 bikes. Was advised to go for 3 although only use two bikes as then they can be further from door if necessary. When fitted rack/ bikes can be slid away from door. Doors open sufficiently to remove toilet cassette. It can be a bit of a struggle with electric bikes. They do videos on website

Hi Solaris - is the tow bar you have the Altera attached to a fixed or detachable one. Is it a swan neck? I note that you are located in Newbury - what dealer did you use? Did they fit a tow bar for you?

Re: Tow bar bike rack for ebikes
Even allowing for the weight being in lbs, 120 = 55Kg plus the rack weight plus the towbar weight so let's assume 55 + 15 +25 = 95Kg.Goldilocks wrote:Hi

Centre of that weight will be halfway through the bike rack, minus a small amount for the towbar centre. so you'll have 90Kg or so about 2m behind rear axle.
Can't recall the maths for that but someone will, but suffice it to say this will get your rear axle close to its max load IMHO.
At least should be considered and better maths done....

Hi Goldilocks. Towbar was fitted by SMC Newark as part of deal. Towball is bolted type. Re IanH comments about weight. Distance behind rear axle is less than 2 m on a PVC. Kingham’s are on heavy chassis so rear axle weight is 2400 kg. Also has air boost on rear springs. But have had van checked on various weighbridges in different loading modes, with and without bikes. All within legal limits. Heaviest loading, for long holidays, has been 3460kg gross. Tight but legal. Kinghams don’t have a great payload so do check weighbridge

If you don't already have the towbar, I came across this bike rack which can carry e bikes. It's mounted to the chassis rather than attached to the back doors.

It's for vans under 6m but perhaps there are similar ones which would suit.

You could use taxis for years for that!!

And if I read the specs correctly, the rack itself weighs 82 kilos?
But... this type of rack has been mentioned here before, and thankfully they now sell a UK version that swings the bikes towards the pavement - up until recently it was hinged the other way, out to the road. It's not a big deal, but it does make it a bit safer to use.

Re: Tow bar bike rack for ebikes
A towbar also weighs something and costs to buy and install, so not needing one would offset the price and weight I guess. The problem is e bikes are heavy, and need heavy duty racks. But what I really want is this!

Buy a trailer then, you could then have 2, one each!!
I did design a simple and very light means of carrying my wife's' Piaggio Typhoon in the back of the Warwick Duo.
Total weight 100Kg and all of it either over or slightly fwd of the rear axle.
Didn't go ahead as, although we both enjoy riding it, we have a fundamental problem with both of us on it, irrespective of who's in front!!!

Re: Tow bar bike rack for ebikes
Hi Goldilocks, we have a Kemerton that already had a westfalia removable tow bar kit fitted when we brought it which I really like as when not in use you cant really see theres a tow bar fitted.
We purchased the westfalia bike rack to use with our e-bikes and it has worked very well and folds down for storage, since we've had it we have done numerous trips in Europe and its worked very well, only down side is because its only a 2 bike rack when its tilted back you still cant quite get the rear doors fully open.
Also we always remove the batteries when travelling keeps the weight down on the rack and not much use to pinch e bikes if the batteries are missing .

This is what we have, heavy but so easy to open the rear doors whenever we want so worth it.

Hi, not answering your question strictly speaking but we thought long and hard over this for our Kingham. Eventually bought folding e bikes, a bit of a bind when packing unpacking obviously but a save on weight and cost of rack. Bought a bike hut, £25 off ebay for onsite storage. Good luck with your decision
