Question about Duetto Re - Buying Empty Question about Duetto Re - Buying

Post by Gray B Tue Jan 26, 2021 9:39 am

Hi folks
A friend of mine is going to see a 1995 Duetto, he could do with a few tips in what to look for regarding problems associated with the model. I also gather they suffer from rust ? Where would he need to look for rust problems?

Thanx in advance

If its on a Transit base, very nearly anywhere
Assuming its good, check out the beds, forget the roof one. In our Harmony, very similar, neither bed was ever nor could be comfortable, incl using airbeds on top and also memory foam.
So bad we sold it asap

As Ian says, there are lots of places that a Transit of that age can rust. The places that you can see easily are not really the ones to worry about so much. They can generally be repaired relatively cheaply.

Unless he's prepared to crawl all over it, I would recommend that he has it professionally inspected.

Check the MOT history to get an idea of how well it's been looked after! Usual places for problem rust are the inner sills front and back - these impact on the suspension mounts and so are an MOT fail (or at least an advisory).  Battery trays also rust and acid can drip down and corrode the inner wheel arches. Avoid vehicles which have been well coated with underseal as that can hide a myriad of problems which will show up after a year or two.

On my 2000 vintage Duetto there was also rusting and perforation above the water tank - not visible without removing the tank and probably not a serious problem anyway. A local garage (with experience of camper vans) MIG welded a small hole on the rear cross member with 16 gauge steel plate for ~£50.  Will be back to them in better weather for a bit of 'reinforcing' on the front inner sills.  Its definitely worth getting the underside sprayed with waxoil having fixed any welding problems - a real PITA job - but well worth doing in the long term. MOT inspectors like waxoil as they can see any problems...
