Purchase advice 2003 Trooper
Hi
I have been offered a silver 2003 Trooper with very low mileage (38500). I’ve been told it’s the 102bhp model.
It’s an LE. I’m not sure what that means. It has full service history including a cambelt change in 2018 at 31k.
No expense has been spared on the vehicle and it’s been maintained by VAG specialists.
I have spoken to them and they have confirmed it is one of the best condition Troopers they have ever worked on. No rust at all with an excellent underside with the original underseal still in excellent condition.
I think I’d be very hard pushed to find a better one and don’t know how long that might take but it’s expensive.
If I went for it it would be a keeper for many years but I think I’m just nervous of taking the plunge with a price tag of over 20k. The VAG specialists believe it to be fairly priced for the market today given it’s exceptionally clean condition and said it should hold its value.
Any thoughts would be appreciated.
Thanks

Re: Purchase advice 2003 Trooper
It will be one of the last T4's converted by A/S
LE stands for 'last of everything' or so us owners of the LE variant say.
We had an LE Clubman which I think came after the Anniversary edition
Ours was a 2004 Reg. but built in March 2003
They were a great set, as being the last incarnation of the T4 some even had a few of the new T5's refinements.

any links to the vehicle itself?
is your Gatcombe a T 4 or 5
found this for info

There is a 2003 Trooper with even lower miles (19500) for sale at JMT.

Re: Purchase advice 2003 Trooper
That is pretty expensive - £23k is roughly what we paid for our T5-based Trooper five years ago! But as they say, market conditions are frenetic at the moment.
IMO you should not get too concerned about low mileage or very very low mileage on a T4 - the running gear should do hundreds of thousands of miles without issues, so it's not (IMO) worth paying a big premium for 30k versus 60k miles. In some ways the 60k mile van could be in a better state, as it's less likely to have sat around for long periods.
One tip though - check that you find the Trooper's bed comfortable. Some people are Ok with them and others find them very uncomfortable - it all depends on body length and where your hips lie in relation to the dips.

Re: Purchase advice 2003 Trooper
Thank you I think the main reason the price is expensive is because not only is the mileage low but the condition is exceptional for a T4 and I would choose that over mileage any day. It just happens that it’s also low mileage and have been told drives like new.
We currently use a foam layer over the bed in our T25 so we’d do the same or a mattress topper for the Trooper.

Also there just isn’t the choice out there as I’m looking for a late registered T4. They do come up but not that often. More 90s ones available but I particularly want the 2.5tdi engine.

Re: Purchase advice 2003 Trooper
The good advice you had re checking the beds is far and away the most important, all else considered.
I bought a Harmony without doing so, big mistake. Literally nothing we could do, either bed layout, 2 singles or the crossway double, added airbeds, memory foam etc etc worked.
Sold it at a massive loss and couldn't wait to see it driven away by the dealer!!!!

It is pretty impossible to tell though just from a couple of minutes lying on one for test out so you might not have known for sure even if you’d done that.
I think some of the fiddly layouts might be more uncomfortable than a straight forward rock and roll bed but that’s just an assumption.

Check the dealers feedback just as much as the vehicle. I believe the one your looking at is from Nick Whale.

Show us more details then you will get a more constructive set of advice but for my personal part having had a T4 and a T5 and at present looking into T5/6 upgrade auto, I would go for it.
So what is your present A/S vehicle?

Same here with the T5 - it's actually not a big deal. It does take up a little bit more space, but still fits behind the seat no problem when the bed's up.
