Eventually Got Round To It - Microwave Remova
I can probably count on two fingers the amount of times I’ve actually used my microwave, other than for bread storage, so armed with screwdriver, saw and sander, this morning saw the demise of it and its housing.
I like the shelf above the microwave, so I left that in situ.

Looks good, we he removed ours and had cupboard door put in place to match others.
Van so quiet now without the dreaded microwave rattle.

Re: Eventually Got Round To It - Microwave Remova
Looks much neater. Great job.
I don't have a microwave in my van, and if was given a choice of accessories, a microwave wouldn't even feature.
Who ever thought it was a good idea to put such a heavy device high up in a van?
From what I read they're prone to vibration damage anyway and are not designed to be shaken about in a motorhome.
Friends of mine with a non AS van admit to only ever using theirs to store toilet rolls.

Re: Eventually Got Round To It - Microwave Remova
Nice mod!!
I don't want to turn this in to a microwave vs "normal" cooking debate but I must admit, I wouldn't be without my microwave - I love it. Ready meals are done in 4 mins - ideal when the ferry is delayed and you don't rock up to a pitch until 9PM at night
Mine is in a different place from yours though (think Symbol Plus kitchen layout) so it's not really in my way.
Would you have a photo of the inside, looking out?
Great job Kingham

I reported on the forum last year that the housing fixings all came loose and the shelf dropped. It was fixed under warranty, but quickly came loose again, meaning I had to beef it up myself. Poor design and much better without imo.

Thanks RogerThat,
I totally get that others love microwaves, but I don’t even have one at home and don’t eat microwave meals. (Actually incorrect now, as this one is now sitting on my kitchen bench awaiting a 3 pin plug )
I’ll grab an internal pic later,
Ken.

Snap!
Removed ours last year to leave exactly the same situation.
If you haven't already done so, you can replace the isolator switch in the shelf with a normal 3-pin socket. Makes for a great, out of the way, charging point.

I haven’t done anything with it yet, but was going to contact AS to see if they have a combined 3 pin socket with USB outlets on the plate, like my domestic sockets.

When I get round to it, I plan to fit one of these.

There wouldn't be enough room in the housing for a USB port too.
But you could fit a standard 3 pin mains and a USB port next to it?

That’s the type of thing I have in mind

There’s plenty of room to extend the aperture for a double unit, or just as easy to put a socket and USB outlet side by side, as you suggest

Thanks for this. I really need to do the same in my Kingham, is it straightforward ie remove screws and wires or is there any sawing to be done?

As an aside, l notice that you still have the pockets on the sink unit base. I could never understand why they are there and subsequently moved mine to bathroom wall above the bed. Now l can keep my phone, keys, wallet and bed time book to hand... Worth a try?

Hi Kingham,
We're not particularly happy with how the edging looks on our "new" unit - it's coming unstuck.
Could I ask what you've used for edging? Or have you left the exposed ends showing?
Thanks in advance.
Tommy.
