Rattles in habitation
Anyone know what causes the horrendous rattle at the rear.I'm sure it's the cooker but I've tried packing every orifice without success Also bunjied a teatowel round the kitchen towel holder. It's definitely a metallic rattle.

Re: Rattles in habitation
The list of possibilities is quite literally endless!
Suggest having someone with a good ear stood in the hab area while you drive (carefully) around somewhere quiet like an industrial estate on a Sunday or something. There may be legalities and / or health and safety issues around that suggestion

A very experienced friend once told me that 90% of rattles in a motorhome originate from the cooker/hob, and 90% of squeaks come from the fridge..

Re: Rattles in habitation
I have recently been on a mission to cure rattles and found most unobvious ones to be the cooker,as already suggested.I have eliminated them and the areas you may want to try, if you haven't, that have done it for me are:-
...chrome grill around cooker rings
...heat shield below knobs
...shelving in grill and oven
...glass oven front.
I have used bits of pipe insulation in various ways to hold these offending item still and made a massive difference in my case.
Good luck....

Re: Rattles in habitation
might I suggest ear plugs or a louder radio?
seriously though as several have said it will be some part of the cooker but whether or not you ever work out which part of the cooker is down to luck

And the baking tray stays in the oven permanently on one of these to stop it rattling.
It can withstand oven temperatures but we find it also works great as somewhere to sit the hot tray when removed from the oven.

Re: Rattles in habitation
Thanks for all your suggestions, but I'm now wondering about the Truma heater as that rattles if you tap the floor near it. Have taken front off but would be impossible to iliminate the rattles. Front cover had obviously not been off since installed as it was filthy inside. Does this not come under the habitation service as van was only purchased from dealer in September?

Re: Rattles in habitation
Habitation check (it's not a service) only checks appliances to see if working. It does not strip anything down unless you specifically asked for a service , such as on a fridge.

Re: Rattles in habitation
A very wise, sadly ex- member of this forum came up with an excellent Unexplained Noise Detector Device which has never let us down.
It consists of an inner tube from a roll of kitchen foil ( the longer the better). On a straight road have your passenger turn round in their seat, put one end of the tube to their ear and slowly move the other end in an arc taking in the area from which you think the rattle is coming. Works like a charm.
First time of use it pointed up a set of keys hanging and banging in a locker. For 2 years we had suspected and rejected everything from brakes, fridge covers, hab door, shower panel and many more possible causes.

That was before I joined but I came up with the same solution, a few extra self tappers to stop panels moving against each other and to hold the grip for the electric element in place. Also make sure the vents in the top of the front cover are well separated.
Second worst is large Hekis that have wire guides for the blind, travel with fly screen 75% across to stop this.

I place a small foam block mid way along the Heki wires, close blind and flyscreen 1/4 way, silence ensues.

Re: Rattles in habitation
Is it just me but........
We have all come up with various ingenious ways to stop all these really annoying rattles but IMO it is shocking in vehicles which cost well over £50k new.,
It’s all well and good saying they all rattle but I did two self builds before buying my Symbol and they were both rattle free because of a bit of common sense and a few extra fixings (at minimal cost).
I’ve spent the last 6 months sorting out rattles and pretty much every single one has been fixed for peanuts, the cost cutting these days behind the shiny cupboard doors leaves a lot to be desired!!
I still love my new van though

Apart from the banging bunch of keys and an annoying tendency of 2 stainless steel egg cups to resonate at a particular speed, we have no other internal rattles or squeaks. I don’t pack anything or wedge anything apart from the grill pan in a cloth bag to prevent it damaging the gas fittings and the back of the TV with a foam block to stop possible damage to the TV if it touches the vibrating bulkhead as we move.
No, we are not deaf either.

You are very lucky Quilter.
I test drove a fair few vans before buying and some were beyond belief regarding rattles!

Yes, I think we are. Our last van, a Bessacarr, had a rubbing noise from the overcab blind. A regular squirt of silicone furniture polish used to stop it for at least one trip but it was maddening if it started as we were driving.

Re: Rattles in habitation
Hi.
I have had a squeak for a couple of years that I couldn't track down. Eventually found that it was the oven door. The catch has a pin that fits into a hole with a clip inside. It's the clip that squeaks. So now I just fold a tea towel over the door and then close the door on the towel.
Just about impossible to eliminate all rattles and squeaks considering we have a MB which are renowned for their hard suspension.
Cheers

Re: Rattles in habitation
On our crapice oven door I stopped it rattling by taking it off and inserting the pin (2) through cut off rawplugs, then put a spring on the top and bottom of the hinge so it can't bounce up and down, voila no rattles! Still pad the lock side with a piece of non slip rubber though. The oven in out last autocruise (stoves) was so much better and didn't rattle at all.
Performance wise chef still manages to turn out a sunday roast in the crapice so it can't be all bad I guess!!

The hinge screws on ours are so tight that I cannot remove oven door - or adjust it!. They are not left hand thread are they?

Re: Rattles in habitation
On my cooker I have a square of the non slip matting , off the roll, in black under the glass lid and also one on top of the glass lid not only stops scratches from anything put on there also keeps the lid quiet,
The grill pan fits into a silicone laptop bag in the grill and the oven tins go into another laptop bag on the oven shelf, no rattles, I only get a few little rattles if I forget to put in the little rubber plugs between the window blinds and the blind frame. then all quiet. in the pot cupboard I did have foam between the plates but this last trip I tried without and it was still quiet, so now I do not use anything.
The cutlery tray which is in a drawer I put the clean tea towels and oven gloves on top, no rattles from there.

I see no ones mentioned the microwave door, one seriously annoying squeak was traced to the door hinges, a small bit of silicone gel and all is fairly quiet.
