Rattles Empty Rattles

Post by merv Sun Dec 15, 2013 3:17 pm

2013 Nuevo EK: I've got an intermittent (naturally!) loud rattle which I believe is from the front roof light area. I don't think it's the blind and could be the casing.
Has anyone else experienced this with the Nuevo front roof light?

Well, not exactly a rattle, and not even a Nuevo, so maybe not much use to you.
BUT, the front roof light on our Inca - very similar to a Nuevo - produced horrendous wind noise at speed. Cured by stuffing a cushion in it, held in place by the fly screen.

It could be the blind or casing - it is only fixed with about four pathetic screws. The surround cover unclips so easy to investigate

This is very interesting. My new Winchcombe has a rattle that is driving me mad but doesn't start until about 50 miles into a trip. Comes from above the cab so could well be something in that area as I cannot find any internally loose fittings.
So, I shall start investigating the lights  up!

It took me a while to work it out but I think Merv is referring to the Heki rather than any of the lamps.

In the handbook of my Nuevo, it states 'wind noise from the Heki rooflight can be reduced by closing the blind'. I wonder why they didn't do something about it if they knew it was there. I know there has to be ventiliation to these Hekis but I'm sure there is enough ventilation available from elsewhere.

Thanks for your replies so far and, yes Peter is right; I am referring to the front Heki. I wasn't sure whether that front fitting is a Heki or not so I used the generic term.
It does seem to begin after some mileage which makes me think that it may be influenced by the internal temperature of the van.
My own gut feeling is that it may well be the casing and not wind noise.

Jaytee, it looks as if I may have misled you by referring to 'roof light' when I really meant the front Heki. However, in one of those odd twists I am now wondering if I may be on the wrong track with the Heki as the culprit! After all, those front internal lights on the Nuevo are that rather fancy metal structure....one never knows...
Of course the other problem is the reluctance of my passenger to unfasten the  seat belt and press things whilst the van is moving!

Some Hekis (like mine) have wire guides for the blind/flyscreen and they slap against the side unless the blind or flyscreen is pulled part way across to damp the movement.

Other Hekis have a rigid plastic guide. I have no experience of them.

Hi Mev
Check out the rubber seals in the roof lights (vents), sometimes the seals have been cut out leaving a section missing, the wind will come in via the gap and maybe vibrate the screens or cables.
I had to replace the whole seal on my Heki 3 last year, after a visit to a well known workshop.

Hi me too and its driving me mad. Its the catch on the drivers side that is rattling and if I pull it when driving the rattle stops. The blind wont stay up either and just works its way down the window leaving the fly screen with a 2 inch gap, really annoying but one for the warranty. tap_fingers
