Clutch cable
Hi, I have a 2000 x reg Peugeot Boxer 1.9td symbol, I recently had a new clutch fitted by a reputable garage, they did not replace the clutch cable as it was new, it had been fitted by the previous owner, a real shyster. It will be an after market cable. however the clutch is like an on and off switch. The garage are aware of this and think maybe the clutch will settle down with use. My query is, is it possible the clutch cable could be at fault and would a peugeot cable possibly rectify the action. Thanks in eager anticipation.

I wouldn't expect a difference between an OEM and aftermarket cable. The major concerns are has it been fitted and adjusted correctly. You can easily make adjustments yourself by loosening or tightening the nut on the end of the cable where it protrudes through the rubber bushes on the gear change lever, to adjust the gear change to your own preference.

Re: Clutch cable
The thing is what was the clutch action like before it was replaced?
Having changed umpteen clutch cables on motorbikes, so long as they're routed correctly with no kinks, I've never noticed much difference between OEM and aftermarket parts.

Re: Clutch cable
I meant what was the action like before you had the clutch itself replaced, not the cable.

Re: Clutch cable
You need to adjust the cable so as to allow for the extra thickness of the new clutch plate. If you look straight down from left of the coolant bottle you will see the gear shift arm, below the two coolant pipes. You will see what looks like a long threaded bar running through the bush. IIRC tightening it brings the clutch engagement point of the pedal higher. It's trial and error to get it how you want it. You will need to remove the air intake pipe to get at the adjustment bolt with a spanner. Mine's a petrol Symphony but the layout should be the same as yours being a mk1 boxer.

Re: Clutch cable
There is a measurement for the clutch pedal although I cat remember it and I don't own the vehicle now but as stated above adjust it so it's right for you and you can select and release the gears but don't over do it or you might make it slip if it's to tight

Re: Clutch cable
I have had a go at it today, there was no free play, I have given it a bit of play, but I have'nt tried it on a run apart from fore and aft, now it does not seen as grabby, but my wife is the driver at the moment and she's at work, I will report back when I know more.

Re: Clutch cable
I would have expected the garage who replaced the clutch to adjust it properly as part of their job!

Re: Clutch cable
When the clutch was originally replaced there was a bit of free play in the cable. As I am not driving the vehicle myself I did not realise the free play had vanished. So until it is tried on the road I will not know if the free play I have added has worked.

Re: Clutch cable
It's a long time since I dabbled in clutches (and your model may be a different set up ) but if, as you say, "down to the floor for the clutch to release" then is it not the case that there is too much free play I take it you mean by "release" that only when down to the floor will the clutch plate free, allowing you to select a gear........ OR do you mean that the clutch is biting almost as soon as you lift the pedal from the floor, in which case it needs more free play adjustment. It's in the terminology and may cause confusion in the advice you receive.Oldfella wrote:It was'nt releasing couldnt get gears, it was shot. now we can get gears but the action is on and off, got to be down to the floor for the clutch to release.

Yes Bob, biting as soon as the pedal is lifted, I have given it some free play now and we will try it out tonight on the road.

Just had a new clutch & flywheel fitted on Friday, transit mk7. £648 materials and labour. Not a bad price from our local garage.
