Kingham underslung gas tank filling
Hello. Can any of our colleagues clarify these issues. My tank, which I believe is 25 litre capacity, had three dots showing on the inboard gauge. At the Calor filling station it took nearly 30 minutes to get 14 litres in to full ( the cut out point of the pump.) Is this normal?
Can I get the full 25 litres into the tank or is 25 the nominal capacity.
Thanks. Ian

No! Something is not right. My gauge is rather odd at times, but I can fill it within what seems a few seconds, not really timed it but it is less than 60 seconds. Mine also showed 3-4 green leds and only took 65p of gas! other times it has taken £8 worth to get full.
Now remember you can only fill to 80% as allowance is made for expansion. Others on here have also mentioned that the gauge is not that accurate.
I take it you did hold the button in while filling, sorry for the comment, but first time I refilled I kept pressing the button until I read the instructions.
My local Calor agent will assist with the operation if wanted.

Re: Kingham underslung gas tank filling
Tanks cut off at 80% which is 20 litres (or should do). Read this thread which was my first experience of filling....

Since then , I've not had a problem (never used the same Asda since) and they've all cut off totally when full. The gauges are dreadfully inaccurate.

Re: Kingham underslung gas tank filling
Just reenforcing what has been said.
The tank is 20 litres. That is the tank is capable of holding a maximum of 20 litres of LPG, not 25.
If yours took 14L to fill then it must have been holding 6L so it was at 30% capacity. So your gauge is reasonably accurate? 3 out of 9 LEDS (33%)
It should take about a minute to put 14L in.
I found the first time I filled up with LPG fairly challenging

Re: Kingham underslung gas tank filling
Thanks for the info. This was my second time of filling and at the same garage - both very slowly. First 9 litres went in quickly, but the last 5 litres took forever - like slow drip feed till the pump shut down at just over 14 litres. I had the button constantly pressed - like torture - hence my questions. I will need to seek out another pump next time. Is there a national network?

I use the Autogas LPG pump at the local Shell petrol station
(also takes under 60 seconds to fill the entire tank)

It is just possible that you were the first customer of the day and the tank is well away from the pump. This did occur to us once.
Normally as everyone says it takes a few seconds.

Re: Kingham underslung gas tank filling
Remember that the gauge is only an indicator as temperature plays a big part in this as gas expands and contracts in volume as per the ideal gas law derived to PV=T (Boyles Law)

How many lights are showing now?
That's the first question. Presumably still only one?

Yes, try a specialist Calor type place who will have someone to help and may be able to tell you if anything is wrong.

Re: Kingham underslung gas tank filling
Just been down to Calor Portsmouth. Had 2 leds on arrival, filled up till pump stopped, now have all leds lit. Cost £5.84 and took 9.444 ltrs and also completed the refill in under 25 seconds.
No problem.

Re: Kingham underslung gas tank filling
Being a bit new to all this we have found that the gauge in the van with the dots is hopelessly vague. It’s best to read it when the van is stationary and level. In fact, the mounting of the gauge is so bad that you need to have your head in your armpit to see it from the driver’s seat.
Having tried to fill from flat empty several times the most we can squeeze in is 18.2L. Some pumps deliver less. The pumps are often faulty too. I have found more faulty lpg pumps in 6 months than petrol pumps in my entire 46 years or driving and motorcycling. The one near Okehampton blew out most of the gas I put in yesterday because it would not disengage. Burned my hand a bit too.
The speed of delivery varies widely. Some takes seconds, some minutes.
Morrisons supermarkets seem the most reliable and the best prices.
Watch out for the independent retailer near Kington, Hereford their price is plus VAT.

I use the app filllpg but it's only for Android phones. Their website is suitable for all phones but isn't as easy to use.skegguy wrote:Hi how do people find their auto filling station s as new to this
