VW T4 Trooper 1991 - floor runners?
Morning all,
I have 4 bolt holes in the floor of my trooper and had always assumed the water tank had been changed at some stage and these were the old holes. However I have just seen a photo of another trooper from 91 and it has what appears to be 2 runners on the floor, does any body have any ideas what these were.? They don’t appear to be in the right place for the Bed letgs.
Cheers Chris

Are they in the right position for an additional rear passenger seat? When looking for a Trooper a few years ago we went to look at one with this (rare, it seems) factory option.
The seat was properly belted, and could be removed just by undoing the floor bolts. I have to say that the seat base looked pretty industrial and inelegant, but if you needed one more seat, it would do the trick.

I read somewhere that the seats could be on runners and so could be moved back and forth depending on circumstances.

Certainly some T4 and T5 Caravelles and Californias had optional sliding rail based systems for seats and tables, and there is at least one after-market system that does something similar, but I don't think A/S could fit them as a complete system, as I doubt their bed is compatible.
The one we looked at was a bit of a pain too, in that it took up a big chunk of the central floor space, and also it was in a sort of black plastic material which didn't match anything else in the van. I suspect it was the VW factory option at the time - before the sliding rail system came in as an option - as it had a completely integral seat belt which didn't need any additional mounting points on the side/roof of the van.

So, Chris - what do you reckon to the theory that it's for an extra seat? Do the holes seem in the right place for that?

Good Morning All, sorry for the delay in responding, a few "browser error" issues on the iPad.
So I cant find any reference in the original manual to an "optional extra" or "if fitted", but I don't think they would be for the existing seating or tables as that just wouldn't work at all, there may have been an option to fit an extra seat, but as you say I cant see any seat belt mounting points/holes and the belts on the back seat are lap fittings so I dont think it would be that sophisticated.
I am intrigued so will try and find out further information, unfortunately with the fire at autosleeper all records relating to early models like mine have been lost.
I did try to upload a photo to show the rail fitting on the trooper advertised on ebay, which caused another crash, hopefully this will work see what you all think.
The holes in my floor are slightly wider apart but at around the same distance length ways as the picture in relation to the rails.
Cheers

Well I think the only way to find out is to email the seller on eBay, I am sure he/she will be lovely and able to put us all right.
Cheers

Well, looks like these runners were for an additional “caravelle style” seat, did a bit of hunting around as I thought it might be useful to have the additional seat with a proper seat belt for our little dog so she isn’t right at the back with the lap belt. Ouch!!!!!! 2nd hand runners are about £600 and then the single seat on top of that if you can find one.
Think I might just put a couple of blankin* grommets in the holes for a pound
Thanks for everyone’s suggestions and it has been good t9 get to the bottom of this mystery.
