Tow ball bike racks
Hi, picked up our 2014 Kemerton from Maidenhead on Friday and spent a night in the new forest in thunder n lightening on Saturday everything seems to be working as it should and very happy with the van so far !!, its fitted with a westfalia detachable swan neck tow ball. I have read various posts on the forum before I collected the van about tow ball bike racks but has anyone actually fitted one that when hinged back allows access to the rear doors ?, Thanks.

Re: Tow ball bike racks
I hope someone has some experience as I too have a 2014 kemerton which current has a fiamma door mounted bike rack. Which is ok but if the wife gets her electric bike I'll need something lower to use or else I'll book myself in for a back operation. I was looking at the Thule platform racks but I'm sure I read somewhere the tilt wasnt enough for the back doors to open fully, hopefully someone will sort us out.

I'm sure Paul and Jenny on this site have something, or look at Far not Fast website. I have certainly seen one somewhere that folds down behind the vehicle allowing the back doors to be opened with the bikes still on the rack. Mind you, that may be a struggle to lift!

Try Roofbox, they have several tow bar mounted cycle carrier racks and some that tilt.

I have an Atera Strada DL which I attach to a fixed tow ball on a 2009 Symbol. in the tilted position it is possible to open the rear doors but not fully, it will depend on the exact height of the tow ball. Because the rack is mounted lower than most door mounted systems I find it convenient and can also use the rack on a car as well.

Definitely try Roof box we brought a Atera Strada sport M number AR2684 2bike rack which will also carry electric bikes they also do a 3 bike rack not cheap but you get what you pay for. Its a doddle to fit and it like a Alco hitch.Arry 32 wrote:Hi, picked up our 2014 Kemerton from Maidenhead on Friday and spent a night in the new forest in thunder n lightening on Saturday everything seems to be working as it should and very happy with the van so far !!, its fitted with a westfalia detachable swan neck tow ball. Hi,
We have a Nuevo so don’t need a hinged rack but have been looking at tow ball bike racks. Have seen a post on here and someone has used a MaxxRaxx tow ball rack that i think is hinged. Maybe worth a look.

Re: Tow ball bike racks
We have an Altera DL3 bought from the Roof Box Company. If I mount our bikes on the outer two positions, it allows full access to the rear doors on our Kingham. It's an ingenious design which slides away from the rear to achieve this. We gave ours a tremendous pummeling over the unmade roads in the Baltic States carrying two electric bikes. It, and the bikes, survived.

We also have the Altera DL3, and it even takes our 2 electric bikes well, and allows the doors to open.
