Where to fit Dashcam
Hi
I am looking for advice about where to fit the Dashcam.
I have a Stanway with Remis cab blinds fitted and cannot see where I can fit the camera and still use the front window blind.
There must be lots of AS owners that have encountered the same problem so can you help.
Thanks

Hi (fellow) OAP.
There are details of my installation here. I glued a little acrylic plate into one of the coin trays on the dash, and mounted the dash cam sucker on that. It works perfectly.

Hi Dave that’s a brilliant idea. I thought it had to be fixed high up on the screen but obviously not.
Thanks

I fitted this to my Corinium, I feel it’s better behind the blinds because it’s got a knock sensor on the camera, if it was in front of the blinds it would not record anything if they were shut...but it also depends on the size of the dash Cam!!

Nasty crack in the screen, did the knock senser catch the impact?

Hi Ray It’s a Nextbase 312gw that I have to fit. It may fit where you have yours fitted but does the camera being so far to one side affect the width of road that is covered?

I went for the 'cheap & easy' option.
I use the supplied windscreen sucker alongside the interior rear view mirror, so that it's out of sight and it takes seconds to remove it if I want to close the blinds.

It won't if your blinds are similar to ours.OAPtraveller wrote:Hi Ray It’s a Nextbase 312gw that I have to fit. It may fit where you have yours fitted but does the camera being so far to one side affect the width of road that is covered?
Being on one side wouldn't matter as the lens has a very wide angle of view. I would prefer it near the centre though, as any distortion of the view could possibly be used to challenge an insurance claim??

Do your dash cameras ever capture anything interesting?

I hope not Don. To be honest, I never bother to look. I feel slightly guilty when watching the videos others have posted of the approaches to particularly good aires, and think I should do the same.AutoSleepyDon wrote:Do your dash cameras ever capture anything interesting?
It's a "just in case" accessory, which although not cheap, could easily pay for itself several times over if you have a prang and it's not your fault.

Likewise Dave,
....and not only for the money aspect !
Coming from a former investigation background, more and more footage was being made available to us and was especially useful in bigger cases, where serious injuries or death occurred during the early hours, or in remote areas, where there were few, or no independent witnesses.
The number of times I watched 'criminal' drivers lie through their teeth to avoid jail and would happily let an innocent person go in their stead, made my mind up to always have mine recording.
Ken.

Re: Where to fit Dashcam
Absolutely, cost of Snooper camera £85.00 total cost of off side damage caused by moron that hit us £859.00 and subsequently paid for by his employer's insurance company. Further satisfaction on learning that he had been sacked for two previous accidents in a short space of time and failing to report crash to his transport manager. Without the dash cam that recorded company name and registration, he would have got away with it and leaving us with the repair bill or increased premium if put in a claim. Don't think I'm paranoid but also have camera for car and recently for cycle helmet.Gromit wrote:

Re: Where to fit Dashcam
I would not have a camera on my cycle helmet. IMHO it is akin to sticking a spike on it aimed at the brain. The helmet is designed to absorb the impact and deform but the hard camera means that the helmet material will be pushed in towards the skull and the cushioning effect will be nullified. I believe having a camera on his skiing helmet was what caused the devastating damage to Michael Schumacher.

Interesting point Peter, and it does make sense.
I guess the obvious alternative is to mount the camera on the handlebars . . . and hope it doesn't perform intimate surgery on your vital bits if you go over the top!!

Re: Where to fit Dashcam
I transfer my dashcam from car (where i used the "permanent" stick on with an adhesive pad mounting) to the Nuevo where I use a separately purchased sucker mounting. In both cases the camera is mounted behind the rear view mirror where I can reach the "keep this segment" button and see its flashing red light but NOT the monitor screen which I prefer to leave on because it shows clearly if the usb connection has popped out of the accessory socket. The latter has not been an issue since I started using a good quality USB power plug.

It’s fine and catches all the road, I use it driving on both sides of the road...

Driving on a wet road last year in France, a car approached a bad bend coming toward me, lost the back end and skewed across the road......good job I was going slowly and we didn’t collide.....my language was a treat

I tried mine on the dash but the vibration was unbelievable.
So mine is stuck low on the screen, using the 3M sticky pad rather than the sucker. This allows me to remove the camera and leave the mount in place, and the blinds still close.
Will see if I can grab a photo for you

Ours is in the same location to Daves (copied off his!) but on the opposite side for wire routing convenience and as the others have said no problem with the blinds

Re: Where to fit Dashcam
Mine is fitted as Daves (thank you Dave for the idea) it was a pain on the windscreen with the blinds having to keep taking it off and on again and making sure it was aligned properly (Nextbase 312).
Your alright with the Nextbase but with some cameras your not able flip the way it records so you pictures are upside down if you fit on the dashboard in this way.

With the 312, if mounted up at rear view mirror, I assume cables are taken up and along the top and down to 12 V socket? Is there enough cable?

Ours came with several yards of cable . . . and I exaggerate only slightly!Lorfal wrote:With the 312, if mounted up at rear view mirror, I assume cables are taken up and along the top and down to 12 V socket? Is there enough cable?
I got Halfords to wire ours in, and I presume they took the feed from the fuse box under the dash. There's no sign of the wire until it exits the trim near the camera.
