Thetford oven door
The oven door in our Beckford is hinged on the left hand side. When we hit a decent bump whist travelling the door flies open
Just wondering if anyone else has experienced this and how have they fixed it
We cant get an answer from the thetford agents here in New Zealand as they do not import this particular oven into NZ
Thank you

Re: Thetford oven door
We have fitted a plastic turnbuckle to hold the door shut. Just a normal brown plastic device from a caravan accessory shop and screwed it into the wooden cabinet that the oven is built into: works perfectly.

Re: Thetford oven door
Common problem I am afraid, many of us have fitted this little mod Spospe has suggested! I also took the door off and inserted springs in the top and bottom brackets now it can't rattle up and down either!

Re: Thetford oven door
Thanks. Yes we also inserted washers in the top and bottom to stop the rattles! Have managed to find a plastic turnbuckle online in Christchurch nz so will order one today. Next problem we face is stopping the microwave squeaking and rattling.! Any suggestions on that one. Thanks again. Appreciate all the replies.

Re: Thetford oven door
We had squeaking and it was due to the door hinges. The hinges on our door are just simple round pegs, which go into holes in the supporting brackets. All it took was a tiny amount of grease on the rubbing parts (I used a small screwdriver to put it in place).

Re: Thetford oven door
Hi Naki yes have had Trailite look at it several times and have not come up with anything that has improved the situation for any length of time. I have one of those turnbuckles suggested coming from UK Caravans in Palmerston if it is ok it will be a $20.00 fix which will be great
Thanks for the suggestions

Re: Thetford oven door
Hi Madmac
About five years ago, late at night we were driving into Gisborne in our Auto-Sleeper Symbol when there was a large explosion coming from the year of the van. My son got a hell of a fright! The van had gone over a large pothole and the oven door had exploded into many pieces.
The vehicle was out of warranty but the agents at the time (Auckland Motorhomes – with the previous owners) contacted Auto-Sleepers who promptly arranged for a replacement door free of charge. I don’t know whether the current agents could be relied upon to do the same but you may want to try this option. Good luck.
Regards
Keith (from Auckland)

Re: Thetford oven door
I dont know what oven is fitted to your van but when we got our Windsor the oven door was hinged on the same side as the bathroom wall which meant you couldnt open the door fully or remove the shelf (so much for inspections!). It was sorted as it was possible for the door to be hinged on the opposite site

Re: Thetford oven door
Ours which is a thetford caprice is placed between two cupboards so no problem there with door opening. Thanks.

Re: Thetford oven door
For the microwave we took off the extractor and tightened all the screws, then added velcro inside the door.
As in this thread https://www.autosleeper-ownersforum.com/t20500-auto-sleeper-warwick-duo-modifications-2017
For the oven remove the wire shelves from the oven and store elsewhere, remove the glass doors bend in the sheet metal that the glass door slides into and replace the glass. Why an oven designed for a motorhome makes such a racket on the move is perplexing, I imagine it is a caravan design and no one would hear the racket when they are in the car.

Re: Thetford oven door
I have a cunning plan... what does the team think?
Our crapice door doesn't fly open anymore due to the turn buckle and it doesn't jump up and down at the sight of a pothole due to the springs on the hinges but is there another mod I ask myself? It is now nearly silent without the need to go to France
The seal round the oven door is pathetic, what if it was replaced with 5mm fire rope of the type used on wood burners, that way it couldn't squeak and would surely be far better sealed? before I am the cause of Lady G blowing herself through the ceiling* anyone have a reason why you couldn't do that, it must be far more efficient....or does it vent through the door somehow?
* One finds this cooking contraption thing a mysterious object that is far better handled by superior beings to myself, Lady G being of pink gender and Northern persuasion is a prime example.

Re: Thetford oven door
I can't see why it wouldn't work Hog, but I wouldn't fiddle with the door seal if I were you.
If you or the pink person were ever overcome by combustion fumes, or if the van went up in smoke due to a gas problem, it would be an instantly recognisable get out for the insurance assessors.
I expect the seals have to pass Elf an' Safety standards as an integral part of the combustion chamber, and any alteration would be considered very naughty indeed!
Just my opinion - I could be wrong!

Thanks Dave
Very good point, I may hold off and give them a ring on Monday see what they say. I looked at a some new vans of various makes yesterday including a new Winchcombe, good to see that they stall have the same rubbish cooker door that you can lift up and down on the hinges and bound to rattle!

I have just read your posts of last year regarding your oven door. The turnbuckle is a good solution but we use a bungy cord. We thread it through the handel of the cutlery drawer and the oven door. This prevents it flying open and eased the rattles. We have a Worcester Auto Sleeper and live on the North Shore of Auckand.
