Oven door latch - Broadway
Hi our oven door keeps coming open when we drive over a bump.when
You pull it , it has a lot of restance though when shut.
Have been told by the dealer that there is a modification now which means attaching a latch to the outside of oven door.in there words this
.looks unsitely..we have asked for a new oven as still under warranty. Awaiting a reply.
Has any body had this safety latch fitted.a photo would be great.its the oven fitted on a Broadway eb.

Re: Oven door latch - Broadway
I had this problem. It was dealt with under warranty by a local Thetford dealer so I didn't have to drive all he way back to Marquis. They were going to fit the latch you describe but in the end just replaced the existing latch which was a 5 minute job. With hindsight I'm not sure the new latch was needed as the existing latch can be adjusted quite easily by loosening the striker attached to the oven and moving it inwards or outwards as required. I suggest you try this adjustment to start with.Mids wrote:Hi our oven door keeps coming open when we drive over a bump.when

Thanks for your reply.we would have thought the dealer would have tried that before recommending the modification. Not sure if the modification is recommended by the dealer or oven maker

Re: Oven door latch - Broadway
Initially I contacted Thetford and they told me about the enhanced latch. The local Thetford dealer hadn't seen one before and when the paperwork went through it was just for a replacement of the existing latch - like for like. I don't think they tried adjusting the old one. I suppose if the new one hadn't worked they would have gone for the enhanced latch. The replacement latch included the spring clip that goes in the door and the striker on the oven. If anything was wrong with it, it would have been the spring clip in the door. Extracting the clip looked a bit fiddly but the dealer managed it with ease. I am sure there was nothing wrong with the original striker other than perhaps its adjustment.Mids wrote:Thanks for your reply.we would have thought the dealer would have tried that before recommending the modification. Thanks for the info. Not sure why dealer has not tried this. Cant try it myself as motorhome with the dealer having habitation service. And they run out of time as they found a fault with the fridge not working on gas

Re: Oven door latch - Broadway
I've had his with 2 motorhomes, one not A/S. I solved both by squeezing the springy thing that the bolt thing shown in the pictures above goes in to. That fixed it. i'll have a look at winding he bolt thingy out a bit if the problem comes back but the first one I did was still OK when I sold the van. I'm not claiming this is a permanent fix just that it is a way to tightening it up so you don't end up with oven contents on the floor or a rattling door.

I have the same problem, but my fix was low tech. Used a bungy cord between the oven door and a drawer handle - works fine

Same problem (Thetford oven on Winchcombe). Same current solution, bungy cord. Van now with marquis who say they have turned the striker pin round as it is worn and have a new one and new catch on order. We shall see. One warning the spring in the catch is difficult to fit (by me!), since that was the previous 'solution'.gpilky wrote:I have the same problem, but my fix was low tech. Same issue for me. Replaced the pin and catch with no improvement. Currently tie the door to adjacent cupboard handle with caribiner and thick rubber band. Even thought about converting to a bottom hinge door. Will try winding out the pin as suggested. As mentioned by Tim042 the spring is a swine to fit.

Very late to this conversation but we solved our problem by putting a small piece of rag over the pin and shutting the oven door. Instant 'cure'!

Our Thetford Caprice side hinged oven door kept flying open as well.
I replaced both parts of the useless catch which made no difference.
Kenmore Caravans sell an extra safety catch availability on eBay, it looked like it might work but it wouldn’t fit.
In the end I made a clamp which works great but not pretty, the Mk2 version will be neater!
