Duetto hook up help Empty Duetto hook up help

Post by Laney Lintel Tue Jun 28, 2016 5:01 pm

hi, after using my van for the first time I had a shock when I got back to it at 10pm to find I had no power so no lights or loo pump or running water.  Luckily gas hob so at least I got my hot chocolate!
I presume because van has been sat on drive for 2 months and I only drove about 60 miles the leisure battery is not charged.
Referring to the manual and then looking at my RCD switches has got a bit confusing.
Manual States ensure RCD is off, that bits easy.... With hook up connected turn RCD on, press test button which should cause switch to trip, turn RCD switch back on.  All seems straightforward.
Next bit....switch the 10 amp MCB (no. 2) to the up position (on) this controls 240v socket outlets
Switch the 6 amp MCB (no. 1) to the up position (on)this controls water heater main lights water her fuse switch and battery charger.
Looking at my RCD the next two switches have B10 230v and B6 230v so which switch is which? I would presume the first switch next to RCD is no.1 and the next one No. 2.
I am hoping someone can point me the right way as I don't want to blow anything!
Confused

Hi Laney.
If your set up is the same as mine, then yes, the two MCBs are 10 amp and 6 amp.
Normally both will be on (up).
However, these are connected to the 240v (hook up) side of things, whereas your problem appears to be that you have no 12v to power your lights and water pump etc.
There are other fuses usually in or near to your control panel for the 12v, but as you appear to have no 12v power at all, then I would start by checking the leisure battery.

How familiar are you with the 12v control panel ?? Does the meter show any charge in the leisure battery ?

Hopefully someone with the same van will be able to be more specific.  There are a number of regular contributors with Duettos.

Laney

B10 = 10 amp
B6 = 6 amp

The battery charger has its own switch to turn it on. In my Duetto it is in the small cupboard under the oven. The leisure battery will only charge when on mains hook up with the charger switched on, with I think a charging light then illuminated on the panel above the sink.
The leisure battery charges automatically while the engine is running.

After driving 60 ,miles ( hour and a half to two hours maybe) I would have thought the leisure battery would have charged. The split charge from the alternator whilst driving needs looking at.

Could the 12V just be switched 'OFF'?

I must be driving too fast then, it only took an hour not 1 half to 2 hours!
The 12v was switched on, I only got a little blink from a bulb then it went off, none of the others worked so not just that bulb.
Should the 12v switch on the control panel be on when hooked up to charge.
I cannot find a battery charger switch, def not under cooker or near RCD switch.
The battery condition indicator lights do not come on at all.
Apparently, according to manual there is a zig x3 battery charger and that this should be switched on although it does not say where it's located!
Thought it would just be a simple job of plugging it in!
Any more help would be greatly appreciated

Why do they make things so difficult, now cannot get the back back in properly:

You shouldn’t have to remove the back panel to switch the charger on and off   scratch head there’s normally a cut out in the  panel so you can get to the switch, although why anyone would deliberately want to switch it off is a mystery to me (but then a lot of things are).  hugegrins

As for re-fitting the panel. If you fit the left hand side into the corner and hold it with one hand while you give the other side a firm push (or even a thump) it’ll go back into place quite easily. Then it’s just a matter of re-fitting the screws.

None of this explains why the leisure battery is doesn't work after an driving for an hour though. If it started from flat it wouldn’t be fully charged but it should certainly be usable. Sounds like a duff battery (which is very possible if it’s been left totally flat for a couple of months) or a problem with the charging system.

think_smiley_46 After a winter of little use our Duetto would loose power to everything at least once during  the first couple of days of re-using. In the control panel there are fuses for the habitation equipment. A  spray with electrical contact spray and wiggle the fuses would sort things. When on hook up there should be a red light on the charger if it is switched on. I think the rest of the checks have been covered. Good luck. up!

Hi there, Brodco wave
There is a little cut out, I presume whoever took the back out before me put the board back the wrong way round as the cut out was the opposite side to the switch scratch head
I have problems due to my Rheumatoid arthritis and unfortunately, my thump is pretty useless nowadays but I do know a boxer so will ask him. fight fight There weren't any screws.
Dave 418, thanks for that info.
I do recall the seller saying that I may need a replacement leisure battery at some point......obviously that point was its first night of use so_sad.
So I think, whilst it's raining I will have to look into getting a replacement leisure battery.  Does anyone have any ideas or tips on what to buy or where to go and get one fitted? I wouldn't be able to fit one myself.  I was thinking of getting a habitation check as not sure when it last had one so perhaps they can do a battery fit as well??
Many many thanks for all your replies and help, it's really confusing as this is my first camper and having disabilities makes even the smallest of jobs into a major task and it's scary thinking I could mess something up...especially when I've had my pain killers shruggconfused3scratch head unwell

Laney, Don't spend money on a new battery without first establishing that the present battery is duff.   Halfords would run a check for you, usually without cost.

Thanks all,  it was the relay switch that had gone, replaced it and got a new battery as that was definitely dead!
Once again thank you for your replies
