Topaz Road tax
Can someone please tell me if the Topaz is classified as PLG or taxed as a heavy motorhome because mine is recorded as the latterand I cannot see reason for it

Re: Topaz Road tax
Do you mean currently PHGV? If so it is cheaper than as PLG, I think.

Re: Topaz Road tax
My Gloucester is PHGV, £165. 3880kg.
Sounds like your wrongly registered. Speak to DVLA.

Re: Topaz Road tax
I have a 2005 registered 2.5 litre Topaz. The V5 describes it as "Taxation class - Diesel car"
I have just paid £290 for 12months tax.

I have a 2001 2.4D Topaz, and the tax is £235 a year.
I haven't got the V5 to hand, but I think it says PLG.

Re: Topaz Road tax
I see DVLA havnt got there finger out yet. They got our Duetto wrong. The V5 said van so I made sure I checked the Rienza. It is classed as PLG , £235.00, Motorhome. This is a 2.4 Transit 350 base vehicle.
I thought it would be more,£290, with it being a heavier vehicle. I cant make sense of how they work out what we should be classed as and what we should pay.
When my father lost his V5 for his MGB GT they couldn't find MG in there listings. They tried to tell him it was a kit car, special build. It took a visit to the VOSA test centre to get that sorted. That was 15 years ago.

Re: Topaz Road tax
Lots of advice, thanks for your help. I will persue the matter further with the assistance of Todds as the DVLA seem convinced they are right. Mind you if they haven,t heard or list MG I wonder how some of them find their own way to work-or maybe its the negative approach all Gov,departments are told to behave.

Re: Topaz Road tax
Download table V149 from the DVLA website. VED is now very complex and depends on when your Topaz was first registered. What follows assume it was first registered after 1 March 2001
From your figures of £500 plus it looks as if it is registered as a car instead of PLG Tax Class 11 (3500kg or less max weight) or PHGV Tax Class 10 if it is over 3500kg.
PLG is £235 pa, PHGV is £165 pa.
Car class 49 Band L is £500 and Band M is £515 based on CO2 emissions. The only other classes that top £500 are huge lorries.
What does your V5 say? Mine says "Private Light Goods PLG"
Interestingly it also says that I have 5 seats including the driver - possibly because it is a 3500kg Nuevo which was originally destined to be an ES 4 berth van before it was fitted with an EK type body with two parallel side settees!
So as no seat belts are fitted at the back does that mean that I can take 3 adult passengers - legally? At their own risk of course!

Re: Topaz Road tax
Answer to above is no, you cannot take rear seat passengers, if your van was before 2006 you would be able to.
My MH a 2003 VW 2.5tdi is classed on the V5 as Light Goods Vehicle and I paid £225 tax.

Re: Topaz Road tax
This thread had me checking things. My V5 says three seats. There are no rear seat belts fitted. The Autosleeper manual says the four birth Rienza will have lap belts fitted to the rear seats.
As for the Tax, I am sure it should be £290 not £235. I will check the web site and try and suss things out. What happens if I am paying the wrong price. I bet DVLA wont own up to that one.

I prepared the document on the subject of carrying passengers in the rear in 2010, it still valid and can be read at the link above.

Re: Topaz Road tax
I will need to look at my Certificate of conformance! I recall that I was told that myvehicle would have Whole Vehicle Type Aproval as it was easier for AS to use a chassis destined for an ES to give me 3500kg than to replate it from 3300 to 3500 - Thanks for the lin,k Peter
I have had motorhomes since 2001 and have NEVER paid as much as £290. Both were PLG.
