TOPAZ - Road Fund Licence
A neighbour has an Autosleeper VW Topaz and pays over £400 for his road tax. This seems excessive, I had two VW Californias and they were the same as my Autosleeper Symbol which is around £215.
Could any Topaz owners confirm the correct amount ?
Cheers

Re: TOPAZ - Road Fund Licence
Hi there,
It all depends on which system is being used to calculate the road tax.
Check out the rates on this DVLA site ....
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
Although it is possible to pay up to £1,090 a year I suspect that most of us are on the £230 a year rate.
Best regards,

Yes - it's true that some T5s (e.g. the 2.5l 5 cylinder models, with auto transmission) were above one of the emissions thresholds, which took their road tax into the £400+ range.

Re: TOPAZ - Road Fund Licence
Thanks Mojo, Dutto
I think you may have it.
It is an auto and a 2.5l 5 cylinder.
Good job I went for the manual on my first California which was the 174bhp 2.5l
Cheers

Re: TOPAZ - Road Fund Licence
Agreed - I think the owners of the autos get a bit annoyed about it because IIRC it's only ~just~ over the threshold - though if you do a lot of miles, the extra cost per gear shift isn't that large...

Mine is a T4 2004, 04 reg 2.5 tdi manual. Currently listed at £285 pa.
It increases every year due to a government rip off scheme. Anyone know the max as thing stand?
You can enter your reg. on the DVLA Vehicle search and see tax rates, MOT expiry, emissions etc.

Re: TOPAZ - Road Fund Licence
What I find odd is that I do 30,000 miles a year in a insignia 2.0 diesal estate and pay £30 per year tax. The boss (SHMBO) does 20 miles a week in a 1100 peugeot 106 and the tax is £140ish per year. Something ain't right.

Hi .Yes that's the way.Don't complain they may make you pay more. They get a lot of tax off the fuel you use.

Re: TOPAZ - Road Fund Licence
I see no reason, using the DVLA website, as to why your neighbour is paying that figure. It's a light commercial under 3500kg , so it should be £225. I far as I can see, it would have had to be registered as a car to be paying £400

That is exactly what I thought when he told me . There is a lot of confusion on what the correct rate should be even with the DVLA.
Still not sure whether he is paying the right amount.
I found this [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
which seems to imply he is being charged wrongly, unless I am missing something in the interpretation.
Cheers

Re: TOPAZ - Road Fund Licence
I would follow the advise on that article and try to get it re-classified. I am surprised that the first dealer, who would have registered the vehicle did not appeal, he must have been used to getting similar motorhomes registered or AS should have done the same if they registered it. What does his V5 state, 'diesel car'?

Re: TOPAZ - Road Fund Licence
...as far as I know, all AS "panel vans" were, and are, based on a superior spec vehicle and converted at the factory from brand new.
Not being an aftermarket van conversion ensures that they are always classified and registered from new as a Motorcaravan.
I have had some campervans - particularly Leisuredrive - still registered as a van. Again, AFAIK, different speed limits apply to vans.
Even if the Topaz was still registered as a van, very unlikely, it still wouldn't explain the high tax.

Re: TOPAZ - Road Fund Licence
My Topaz was the same as yours , changed to a Clubman paid £215 last year, not due until March. doesn`t seem right, the engine in my Topaz was the same as in my Clubman, 2.5tdi

Re: TOPAZ - Road Fund Licence
Hi ,After 2001 the road tax is related to emissions However you need to look at your log book to see you figure.
Its not just the engine fitted that decides. Manual or Auto ,even wheel sizes can give a different figure. Some vehicles must be very close to a change over point.
This could give the variations you are finding.
Hope this helps
