Vehicle Taxation class
Hi, I've just received my annual vehicle road tax reminder. I note that my Autosleeper Symbol is tax as a 'Light Goods Vehicle'. Is this the correct taxation class. I've read a bit about ensuring the vehicle is in the correct tax bracket. I just want to be sure I'm not paying to much in road tax.
Thanks, Dave
Thanks, Dave

Re: Vehicle Taxation class
Whatever it is it's too much! but if you're paying around £240ish , it's in the right class.

Hi there,
I think all motorhomes below 3,500kg are registered as PLG at £230 per annum.

Re: Vehicle Taxation class
The taxation classes are bewildering and make no sense at all.
My 2014 car is Class C and costs £30 a year.
I have a Buell motorbike that according to the handbook has an emission value of 94.0 CO2 g/km, which means it should be in class A, zero tax.
But like all large capacity motorbikes it's £88 per year.

I have just paid £315 for a 2005, 2.5litre diesel Topaz. It's classed as a diesel car !
Can anyone explain why I am paying at this level ????????????

Re: Vehicle Taxation class
This sounds like an error when the vehicle was first registered. When I bought my Celex in 2013 I was sent a letter by Bilbos, the salient part of which was this:KMRTOPAZ wrote:I have just paid £315 for a 2005, 2.5litre diesel Topaz. It's classed as a diesel car !

Between 2003 and 2007 Volkswagen registered our models with the road-tax class "Diesel
Car". At the time this was how Volkswagen's system was setup and the cost of road-tax
was roughly the same as other taxation classes. Since then the Chancellor has introduced a
graduated road-tax system and greatly increased the road-tax for some vehicles, this has
made it advantageous to alter the road-tax class of your Bilbo from "Diesel Car" to "Private
Light Goods".
If your vehicle is already taxed as "PLG", you need take no action. If your vehicle is taxed
as a "Diesel Car" it would be to your benefit to have the taxation class changed, the level of
saving varies with engine size from £25 to £215 per year (2008 rates). If you wish we can
supply further guidance and supporting paperwork, which should enable you to get your road-
tax class changed. Please note the DVLA do not backdate changes or give refunds for
expired tax discs, however you may be able to claim a partial refund for a current tax disc
after the taxation class has been changed.
Obviously the actual monetary values have changed, but it implies that A/S experienced the same issue as Bilbos...

Thanks Mojo, just the info. I needed.
Letters and phone calls being prepared Alan.
It pains me to think I have been paying over the odds for the last six years.

With no backdated refund for those 6 years either.. I bet if positions were reversed and the fault was yours they'd try and recover backdated tax.

230 0r 250 Tax?
Hi
Just purchased as 2003 Symbol. On the V5 described as a MotorCaravan and vehicle class N1.
Anyway the tax as N1 PLG is 250 which I’ve just paid.
I have tried contacting DVLA but nothing but remote messages and even the email link they provided allows you only to put inn your details and not even ask a question!
I know its only 20 but it’s it worth getting this changed, is it possible and any ideas on how to contact DVLA except by post?

Re: Vehicle Taxation class
Rob - £250 is correct. The reference above to £230 is from posts back in 2014.

I've been looking around for a 'cheap' runabout car. Narrowed it down to a Citroen C4 or Peugeot 207/308. Intend to go for a £30 VED tax model but oh boy.....sorting which is and which isn't is an absolute nightmare! Example, found two Citroen C4's last week....identical engine, same year plate, model etc yet one was £30 tax the other £120. Couldn't figure out why until i looked at the build date.....and just two weeks separated them.

Re: Vehicle Taxation class
Just got my Tax Reminder, for £265 gone up another £10 from last year
What the Gov going to do for taxes when they have took all the cars off the road.
Just think how much we would save if it was like Holland (Get on your bike)
No Insurance, No Tax, No Parking, No Toll Roads, No Parking Fines, No Bus Lane Fines.
Maybe all the Rich, may pay more taxes ha ha dont think so.
Was looking at an electric car, asked Salesman the cost of Battery if it fails, as I was reading about in US people buying electic cars, brilliant till the batteries failed, then locked up in garage because the couldnt afford batteries.
Salesman didnt know, as they had not worked that out yet, and no one had asked before, mmmm makes you wonder?

Re: Vehicle Taxation class
With some electric cars you lease the batteries. Don't know how that works or costs. I do know a guy who imported an early Prius and the batteries went, the cost then over 15 years ago was something like £3000 to replace.

Re: Vehicle Taxation class
Hi
How it works depends on the manufacturer. For example Tesla and BMW sell you the batteries with the car whilst others like Renault offer a lease or outright purchase.
A Renault Zoe wil, cost between 60 to 70 pcm to lease the batteries although if purchased on a PCP that can be on a sliding scale according to your millage.
With a lease option the cost is pcm but then you don’t have to deal The risk of failed batteries.
But most car batteries last longer than the manufactures expect and so they are exploring ways to use batteries that have been removed from cars eg power walls for houses (Nissan for example).
The question of lease or purchase is a bit like insurance. Insurance companies don’t make loses and neither will manufactures make a loss on leasing batteries so purchasing should be the way to go - albeit with you taking on the risk.

Tesla can do 300+ miles /charge, and battery rated at 2000 cycles before significant capacity loss. That's 600,000 miles?
