Hello All.
Thinking of having a step installed across the rear of our 1998 Symphony. Work to be carried out by  a competent  firm. I wonder if any other owners of the same or similar  hi top could advise on likely cost.
Many thanks and a Happy Christmas to All.

I thought the Symphony had a rear step as standard.

From looking at a few Symphonies advertised online, it seems they were optional.

I've had a rear step on three A-S vans before. Two were custom made for/by A-S and they were only barely adequate for the task - the first one corroded away and had to be completely rebuilt and rustproofed after a few years, and the second was not much better.

The third was a towbar-mounted double sided step, and it was perfect for the job - extremely robust, galvanised and in just the right place (mounted on the lower boltholes on the towbar flange). A basic Boxer flange towbar is about £60 (you just don't bother to fit the towball onto it), and a step is in the range £30-55. Though that's not exactly cheap, you can't get anything much custom made for less than that these days!

The step was like this one - though lighter duty ones are available and you could go a lot lighter and it should still be strong enough:

Trust me, at that price it is cheap. By the time it has been galvanized any decent profit has gone.  I have just refitted the rear step to my truck. I removed it because it was fouling the draw bar in the trailer so have had to modify it by welding another piece of steel on to bolt to the tow bar. It now clears the trailer. The main reason for this is that I can leave the beds made up and forego using the sliding door when on a site between eveents......

That's pretty much the same as mine which was fitted by AS as an optional extra.

I fitted a Watling PP28 to my Boxer Harmony years back after the supplied step (rubber-covered MDF!) rotted to pieces. It's been great. ASOC members might still be able to see my technical sheet on the subject (can't find my original)
