Symbol internal lights
Hi
We continue to get to know our 2003 symbol.
I thought that I had read somewhere that the internal lights have dual voltage fittings so that they can operate on either 12v or 240v when on hook up. However, there is no reference to this in the handbook.
Can anyone clarify please.
Thanks

Re: Symbol internal lights
On my Symphony (forerunner to Symbpl) the centre roof striplight was mains operated, the rest were 12v.

Thanks to both of you.
Maybe AS changed to 12v only when the Symbol was introduced ?

My 2000 Symbol has only one mains light in the center of the roof, all the rest are 12 volt.

Ditto my 2001 Symbol, one centre mains fluorescent, the rest are 12volt fluorescents. One 12volt halogen reading light over passenger seat.

Re: Symbol internal lights
Perhaps I am misreading this thread, but surely, when on mains hookup one can use all the 12v fittings because the habitation battery is being recharged by the mains.

Re: Symbol internal lights
Correct! But the original question concerned dual voltage fittings and those of us with similar aged Symbols have just been describing what we have. Although there appear to be differences depending on exact age and model, there are of course no dual voltage light fittings.

Re: Symbol internal lights
Thanks again for all of your replies.
I will have look later, as it appears common that the centre fitting is 240.
I think it was the previous owner who told me that he believed that in each of the fittings one of the tubes was 12 and the other 240, hence my question regarding dual voltage.
I'll check it later,
Thanks again

Definitely not, each fitting should contain 2 x 8w T5 tubes. that applies to the mains or battery ones, ballasts being fitted inside.

Re: Symbol internal lights
Thanks Paul.
On a related matter, I need to change one of the tubes, but cannot see how to remove the cover as no screw's are visible. Is it simply a matter of levering them off ? In just wary of breaking something.
Thanks

Yes use a tiny screwdriver and on one end there should be a very small recess to put the screwdriver tip in and with a twist, the cover should come off but put a piece of stiff card between the blade and the wall/ceiling otherwise you will damage the material. Hope that makes sense.

Re: Symbol internal lights
I bought mine from eBay last year, when inserting the screw driver to get cover off , be careful you don`t break/crack the cover, gently is the way to go., I also had a complete new light fitted.

Search EBay for Sylvania 8w tubes, you often get better bargain if you buy a bundle of 3 or 4 and then you have some spares.

Re: Symbol internal lights
How do you know if the light is 12 or 230 volt when you are on ehu? The lights will come on either way.
Or does the centre only come on when on ehu?
All my lights work whether on hookup or not(2003 Symbol)

OK Paul. In that case we have no 230 volt lights. And I realise my question had already been asked and answered! Doh!

Re: Symbol internal lights
Just as a final note, having now checked our van, I can confirm that all of our internal lights are 12v only.
It appears that AS must have ceased putting in the 240v light between 2000 and 2003 taking into account the comments above.
Thanks
Carver.

Re: Symbol internal lights
Hi,
Why would they bother fitting a mains only light on a van with standard 12 volt systems? When you are on hook up the charger is on. Possibly had a load of old 240 volt lights to shift, extra indication that your hook up is working? Answers on a postcard please?
